greengage tree

Posted: 22/04/2013 at 08:23

I have had a greengage tree for about 10 years and in the last 7 years have had a hundreds of fruit on it every year. Last year I noticed that the leaves started to dye off early around August and the fruit was rotting quite quickly too. This year there is no sign of any buds or leaves appearing. A lot of the ends appear to be dead, but I have scratched some of the branches below and they appear to be green underneath. Should I cut back hard or just prune the dead branches off or should this just be left alone. Thank you
