You could try doing both. If the later directly planted ones also come into bloom later, you've extended your flowering season!

Sunny but with a chilly northerly blowing here in South Devon. Off into the garden to tidy up, gales and lashing rain forecast for tomorrow.

Swiss chard and kale will grow over winter. If you have bare soil that you want to grow veg in next year, you might think about sowing one of the green manures.
