Well along with many other posters my sweet peas have been mediocre at best this year. David, when do you reckon we can start over with next year's?

I think the idea is that the nasturtiums are a sacrificial planting. They also work well to lure blackfly away from a susceptible edible crop.

Controling Pumpkins

Some people find growing them in a spiral shape helps. Keep training the leader shoot(s) round the plant and secure with wire clips, tent pegs or similar

Looks like one of impatiens imports, Indian balsam. Which is very invasive, it's seeds shoot out like projectiles, and is a pest especially by waterways. Pretty though.

It looks like a pieris to me. Don't know much about them except they like acid soil, or ericaceous compost if in a container.

Compost Problems

I always get zillions of seedlings coming up from home made compost. I think 90% are tomatoes. They aren't really a problem, and most are recycled in the compost bin. I do try not to put seed heads from weeds into the bin, but forget me nots, nasturtiums, poppies etc all go in. Sometimes I get a nice surprise - back in the day, when we had summers, I've had fruiting butternut squash and melon from my compost.
