hiya, yes i raked the seeds into the bare patches. these seemed softer though. theres just the one area with the cracked soil at the top end of garden.

i mow weekly though my mower only has a 2cm or a 4cm choice for length. and i have read that idea mowing height for durable lawn is 2.5cm. so ive been using the 2cm setting. wondering if thats too low as it reveals the patches much more.

also anyone have an idea why some parts arent growing. as you can see in the pic these arent bare and have lawn. just its a lot lighter and stays short. i might try a fertiliser on it and see if that helps. ??

hi Dave thanks for the info. i have other areas that are clay that dont look like this though. which are sticky and in fact have issues of water logging. hence my confusion. this soil its hard to dig into even after watering.

so if i ( well attempt) to dig in to soil to mix in some manure now it should improve it a little??

hi there, have three rose bushes growing out front in nice sunny spot but its not flowering at the moment. The soil is like concrete to get through despite watering and the soil is cracked. I tried to dig in some rose pellets and it was sooo difficult to get through the soil to do so. any ideas on improving roses and the soil around it??

hi there, wonder if anyone can help. trying to improve the lawn. Put grass seed down as there are bare patchs. firstly as you can see from first pic some areas are growing whilst others though not bare are not. very odd. I have also noticed in a couple of areas the soil has cracks in it despite it being watered regularly. any ideas on an action plan to get an even lush lawn. ??

Hi i have a living potted Christmas  tree i got two years ago. It sprouted new sections last year so was able to use again. But I've noticed bottom branches are  not  growing.  I want to keep in pot  still to use again.but not sure what  to do to make it grow. Do i cut the branches back?

silver crawlies in my bag of compost

Hi there. Wondering if anyone can assist. Opened my bag of compost and manure to find loads of silver bugs crawling around in it. Can not tell if they have wings or not. They have both been out in the rain so i am wondering if they mosquitoes. I am worried now as i have used around plants and to repot. Anyone have any idea what these are and if they will affect my plants?

Splitting a Phormium and organic feed..

brilliant thank you guys thats so helpful. i will see how i get on.

i have deliberately not watered it. but with these little bouts of heavy showers its been a bit difficult to keep it completely dry.

so all the pointy tall leaves i can cut back a few feet? as these are the newer growths arent they?

im hoping it will produce new pointy leaves again if i cut it.

hi there,

I have a large apx 6 foot phormium in a pot that i now no longer have room for. I dont really want to get rid of it so thought i could divide it up maybe into two and plant in different places.

can anyone offer some advice. im not even sure how to get it out of its pot its so heavy.

also i have some manure left over and sure i heard you can make an organic plant feed out of this. ie maybe to use on tomatoes and green beans that i am growing.

anyone know about how to do this and if it is works well.
