Frost protection!

Posted: 10/11/2013 at 21:30

Up until this year I have just wrapped individual pots and most have been successful  apart from Hebes I just wondered if it would give sufficiant protection without doing all seperate. we have had such severe winters here lasting for days and almost the whole garden is a frost pocket I could put half by the house and the other surround with fleece and see what happens. If we have a warm winter so much the better apart from the bugs etc.

There are a miniature cherry tree, hebe's,  clematis and a potted climbing rose. most ofmy other plants I have just wrapped bubble wrap around the pots but it was just an idea if might give more protection, I have lost hebe's in the past both in the ground and in pots.

I have a pergola, If I put all my pot plants in the middle and the put fleece or bubble wrap all around the outside of the down posts would it suffice in keeping the plants frost free, also I imagine I would need to cover the top at night. Which would be preferable, bubble wrap or fleece.

Chillies again!

The chilli was bought last year and was in the kitchen nearly all winter but may have been put out in the spring but as I said it has been healthy enough in the summer. some of the fruit has gone from green to red but a lot of the others are turning black. My husband thought they had got some disease/virus and started taking them off and getting rid but then I read that they can grow black first but I don't know if it is certain varieties or all of them.

Bog garden on the edge!?

I have already written this in wild life forum and as yet no answers. cI want to put a couple of plastic  window boxes on a ledge down one side of  my wild life pond to make it into a small bog garden, the water would reach halfway up the window boxes. Would this be too wet for a bog garden, would the roots rot.

Can anyone help.

A Bog Garden on the edge?

I have planting ledges in my wild life pond. There are various types of small wild life in it. What I had thought was to have, along one edge, a small bog garden. As the pond has hard edging I can not make a beach area. Does anyone know if I could use a couple of plastic window  boxes, with holes in the bottom,  along one of the ledges and plant them up with bog garden plants. If the water came,at the  most half way up the side of the window boxes, would it be (a) too wet and (b) would the roots rot in the boxes.

Has anyone got any ideas? All Ideas much appreciated.

Thanks everyone, it is as you say ragwort I have just had a look at some photos on line and it definitely is. I shall get prepared and don protective gear and be rid of the evil thing this instant,or maybe when the sun has gone down a bit. Thanks again.
