You could try something called Actiferm. It stops pathogenic fungi and bacteria, I saw it in an article about box blight in the telegraph, so it might be useful for this too.

Water Butt Smelling Stagnant

Every year my water butt smelt until I came across this article on the net extolling the virtues of EM Ceramics to stop rainwater turning stagnant. Having tried them out I would recommend them.

This is definitely not phythopthora, they have dried out at some point and were not able to recover. It sounds like the roots haven't been able to progress from the planting hole. Also, it looks like they are competing for moisture with a big tree and if they were big plants to start with, then they are always going to struggle.

Spots on Phlox.

Hi Caral,

Your phlox are showing signs of nutrient deficiency with yellowing and puckering of the upper leaves and the spots on the lower leaves, I don't think this fungal. And so I would use liquid seaweed extract as a quick remedy, but also something called GrowBest EM Seaweed fertilizer with added rock dust and worm casts which will provide plants with long term nutrition.

The best thing to do is to train a single stem up a thin stake or broom handle and when it gets to the height you want, pinch out the top to encourage the buds to break below. Prune the whippy growths back to a secateurs length in August and then the new growth in February, back to an inch or two.

could someone ID this please

This looks like seedlings of Himalayan Honeysuckle - Leycesteria formosa. Probably a blackbird has deposited the seeds after eating them. Very attractive racemes of blackcurrant coloured flowers, followed by dark fruits.

Once you have cleaned out your water butt, I would invest in some EM Ceramics from, these are amazing at stopping rainwater from going stagnant indefinitely.
