Seed pods are usually left on the plant until they have gone brown and the seeds have fully ripened. Then just as they are opening you can take them off.
My favourite tree is the oak at the bottom of mum and dad's garden. My sister and I used to have hours of fun climbing up it and sitting up there.
It's a good plant to put where other things struggle to grow
They need to be planted away from the wind and strong sunlight, preferably in ericaceous soil

You might have lost too much root when you dug them up, probably should have pruned them back hard so that the roots didn't have so much top growth to try and support.
