It works out much better value for money to buy magazines such as Grow Your Own or Kitchen Garden and get the free seeds that come with those. I haven't had to buy any beetroot seeds for this year
What about learning about hoverflies too? I'm amazed how many people see a hoverfly and think it's a wasp!
You need to make sure you don't risk damaging the tree roots by planting anything near them.
Also what kind of soil do you have?

What do you mean by 'tickle over'?
Have you tried growing in John Innes seed compost? It is soil based.
