I would knock it out of its pot and have a look at the roots, see if there are any bugs in the soil. If the roots look ok, I'd remove as much soil as possible and re pot it

Why not over seed in autumn, it is a better time than spring.

I think I read that they are best kept growing in pots until they are a good size before planting out.

They are in the soil for a long time, so undug soil is more at risk

Dolgarrog: Bearded have knobbly rhizomes, hard to miss.

I had problems with my Iris sibirica a couple of years ago. They were being eaten by ghost moth larvae, I had to dig up all the soil to remove them, before replanting.
