How about Tropaeolum speciosum, you can grow it through other plants

Dig out a hole, put a cardboard box into the hole, plant the new rose into the box with new soil. The rose should be well established by the time the box has rotted away

The main suggestion I keep seeing is to cover the ground with plastic sheeting for a couple of weeks to allow it to dry out. Also the magazines list some things that you can start off in modules, most things that don't have tap roots, can be done this way

If you are hard pruning a shrub to get it back into shape the usual recommendation is to prune out a third of the stems each year for three years
