We have heavy clay soil where we live.....have not had alot of success with anything lately but have planted an hydrangea.........I dug the soil.....broke it up......then dug a hole......grit at the bottom...fresh compost put in hole with a bit of soil.......slow release feed......have struggled with this garden but feel optimistic that the hydrangea will take.....fingers crossed.  A small Ivy I put there seems to be doing ok.

Can't get nematodes from garden centre......a friend suggested SALT.......do you think a couple of pinches around a plant would be ok as long as it wasn't too near.......not sure.....I know it would affect the acidity of the soil......anyone got any thoughts about this?

I have these two books which I find very helpful..........they come in a little box and are sold as one package.  After having said that you may get more info on the Internet looking up wildlife gardens and bees.....Sarah Raven is very good.

ISBN 13: 978-0-7548-2455-8

ISBN 10: 0-7548-2455-1

think the publisher is LB, doesn't say who the writers are.  Anyway there is alot of info out there, I think Alan Titchmarsh may have some books on it, anyway best of luck jody.

Sounds like you are doing a pretty good job regarding the wildlife jody, if I was a little bumble bee, bird, butterfly, hedgehog......I would certainly come  and visit your garden and might even stay!

pruning lavender

I look after lavender........have removed dead wood........parts of the shrub don't seem happy even though I feel I pruned them  correctly last year......some of the lavender bushes are doing ok and the others are struggling.......will see how they go over the summer.....sometimes they do need replacing........I replaced one last year.

I bought a PH double pronger (forgotten their proper name) from wilkinsons to check the alkaline/acidity of the soil, found it very helpful.
