Potato planting

Posted: 30/09/2013 at 19:43

Hi everyone,

I was wondering when is the earliest you can plant potatoes and which variety give big potatoes ?

I planted new potatoes this year and had a good yeald but the seconds that I planted in a large bag container (about 1 meter width and 24inches deep) which I planted about 8 potatoes in didn't do as well as I was hoping and they were very small even though the plants grew really well and I left them in even after the plants had died off.I planted them in about March and got them up over the last couple of weeks.

I have a raised bed so I'm thinking of growing them in there next year so I can earth them up properly.  So I would be very greatful for any advice given.

Many thanks

Potato leaves going yellow....Hellllllppp !!!!!

Hi I have planted new potatoes in bags for the second year running but some of the leaves have/are going yellow.. also they haven't flowered. They grown to about 1.5 ft.  After removing the yellow plants there were quiet a few good sized potatoes and they tasted lovely.

I have now noticed the potatoes I planted for a later crop have grown to about 2 feet tall and some of those are starting to go yellow.  They also don't seem to be flowering yet either.

Any help or advise would be very welcome

Early potatoes

I started a few years ago with tomatoes but it was my eldest son (now 18) who said why dont I grow veg instead of flowers so last year was my 1st attempt at potatoes, courgettes, carrots, runner beans, peas so this year I built a raised bed and now have beetroot, parsnips, garlic lettuce and other things and they are all doing well.

Ive really got the bug now and its sooooo nice just going out and pulling up fresh veg and then cooking and eating them.  They taste sooo much better.

Most things I've grown from seed so feel really chuffed that now they are veg.. its amazing to me how such a little seed grows into such lovely veg.

Keep up the good workand enjoy the bounty's

What to feed veg ?

I put liquid horse manure.. I made it in a black bin.. it does stink to high heaven but the plants love it,,,, For some reason I dont use it on the strawberries though....

Hi JB I started growing veg last year and I had about 8 lovely Courgettes off my plant and even built myself a raised veg bed and everything is doing really well and as I have grown them all from seed I feel chuffed that they have grown.....

Its very rewarding when all goes well and if they dont go so well then you learn by it andhave another go thenext year.

Good luck

I have herb seedlings and flower seedlings and some brocilli that I have grown from seed they are about 3 inches tall now.

I have opened it up on the odd occassion that it has been sunny  as it was above 30* and I was worried it was getting too ot in there

Hi everyone,
I have a small plastic greenhouse and it often gets to 30* and am wondering what temp is ideal and at what temp do I need to open it up to cool it down ?

Many thanks

Hi there Im pretty new to seed sowing too and I have to say its alot of trial and error with me as well....

This is a fantastic place to get all the help and advice you need I often spend the evening reading through all the threads gathering all the info.

I have got myself a little greenhouse now and am having fun trying to grow things...some are now a 3rd attempt and I feel so happy when I see those little green shoots poking their heads out of the soil....DON'T GIVE UP

slugs and toddlers

I had a large problem with slugs last year so after using pellets that didnt really work  I ended up using broken egg shell as welland this really worked , just scatter the shell around the base of the plants and the slugs wont go near them..
