me  too,but like you obviously if they are causing havoc to your roof or like me rats in the roof you have to do something  ,but what concerns me most is the aggressiveness the want to kill.

I did and failed as I didn't plant them correctly,and the soil was to wet ,need drainage and sunny spot.I love them ,seen them  at ford abbey in a border .

NNE facing and clay soil- help!

I have ,my soil is as heavy as clay soil can get,my veggie garden took  a lot work and compost to get it where it is today  and as well as being clay it is sloping garden on a hill side with more sun in the front of the house than back,I have holly,hazel,Laurel ,fir,sumac,flowering red currant,forsythia oak,,Gunnera,,pyracantha,dogwood,clematis,hellebore,hawthorn,

it takes some effort but I grow a lot more than i have listed,its not easy soil.

They will need support as you train it upwards and this year mine grown as part of a hedge looks really good poking out through the snow.I saw one growing upwards by a front door it looked good,it was planted in the ground and was cut into a square shape as it grew ,I cant see why not in a container.

I have been on the Nigel Slater and co on the B.B.C site which was very good.I did not know that they had stopped.What a shame it was so good and easy .Nigel Slater is on face book but I dont know if his recipes are.
