housework using plants

Posted: 21/10/2012 at 17:05

I been watching that awful advert for a certain cleaner boasting to save you money every month .The way to save money is to use something you have in the garden.Rosemarie for example is a lovely disinfectant and you can use it as a air freshener( or lavender )or as a potpourri.Making the disinfect to wash down the bath for example is to collect the leaves with the stalks put in  a bowel and cover with boiling water ,let it cool down take out the leaves and use.I have also when finished cooking and turned the oven off is to put a few leaves in and you will smell the freshness and lovely scent.

I THINK I have a Peace Lily - how on Earth do I make it happy?

yes ,well.I have one that I keep in the back room out of direct light and although it likes to be moist you must not over water.misting is benifical and feed only in summer .In winter decrease watering but keep misting.if I find a photo Ill show youand another thing dont let it sit in water.

Talkback: Where have all the hedgehogs gone?

Posted: 21/10/2012 at 10:57

something is going on,weather change or what.I ride up on the Mendips and we normally see the deer and their young ,often quite close as they ignore you if your on horse back and we enjoy watching them, but we have not seen any at all for sometime.I know they cull them in winter and that the loggers did disturb them in the forest but you normally see them on the open ground but they are keeping a very low profile if they are there. It does make you wonder when you start to notice wild life is not around or as abundant as it was.

Wartime Farm

I was thinking, since the price of fuel is rocketing, that idea of cooking with just a box and straw ,slow cooking I think its called,a very good one.Except of course a bale of hay has gone up in price.A bit messy for the modern kitchen but a shed or conservatory might do.what you can do in a crisis's,thinking back to the seventies when strikes hit the supply and you had organise your life accordingly to when the power turned off.

Clematis

if you grow nasturtiums next to the clematis ,the black fly should go to them instead, also try  a garlic spray.

is it a fungus?

on my cherry tree there is a clear glue like ooze from the bark, this I thought was due to some sort of insect,is it like that?

Biten by unknown bugs

Posted: 18/10/2012 at 17:01

besides going and getting it checked out, beware there are a lot of mosquitoes (MIDGES) about this year and you must check that you have no stagnant water standing about as this is where the larvae hatch.Best to turn all empty pots upside down and check the water butts which I have just done and emptied because of this.I am a horse rider and in summer when out riding get bitten by horse flies to midges.I put lemon on my arms (if the weather allows a t- shirt) this sometimes works.some people are allergic to these bites and  a repellent might help when in the garden.

when should I prune Buddleia ?

Posted: 18/10/2012 at 16:50

if you prune them now they will be fine, they will have bigger flowers in the summer,as some one said they are tough old things buddleias I have three different  colours, but you can kill them if you prune too much but having said that you'll find hundreds of seedlings everywhere, even on the roof tops!.They are better if they are pruned into a small bush not so "bomb site" looking as my husband would say.
