Welcome to the potting shed

glad to hear your doing so well.It s lovely to hear people getting interested in their gardens how ever big or small. Not many people in my area care about  growing veg .I think they are missing out on pleasure of growing your own food the freshness.Take apples ,I grow mine and in autumn collect from boxes "free" apples left at the roadside. The scent and taste are far better than shop ones and I no longer buy from the supermarket.(I  know this year to be a bit of disaster). good luck with your gardening.

wildlife in the city

we use to have quite a few Hedgehogs but over the last decade they have declined a lot due to the traffic. The last time I saw one he came face to face with a cub fox both looked startled and ran opposite directions. They had come to feast on the slugs and dog biscuits I had put out.

End of season reduced Cannas

often you can get good plants in sales, with Cannas you need to keep them frost free until late spring when frosts are gone.

Brambles and weeds

weedkillers if accidentally should come in contact with your flowers will kill them they have mine the same reason as they kill wildlife its a poison .

Apple tree - loads of spring blossom, no fruit

well to be honest not a lot is going to happen .if your lucky and the bees and warm sunshine come before the wrath of winter you might see an apple, but I think next year is more likely.

Skyscraper Lillies

if you have grown them in pots put in shed away from frost do not dig up as you will end up splitting the bulb and having to wait for a good show . bring back out when frost is gone,if you should get some of the pollen on your clothes brush off dry as if you wet it ,it will stain and as said poison to cats. One of my big African lilies I just put a pot over the top to stop the frost getting to it,it seems to work.

Wild Garlic

wild garlic is best left in the wood, its very invasive and there is always plenty to pick.Wild garlic is lovely and not so strong a taste .

Horse Manure in a Vegan Garden

Posted: 02/10/2012 at 15:38

If the horse eats grass and deposits on the ground it will help to fertilize the ground .It is not harming the horse or the ground its what nature intended to do with the waste.Human and animals that are carnivores are different from the vegetarian point of view as to the eating of flesh at the ended of the day its all waste that's returned to the earth.
