Poinsettia

Posted: 26/09/2017 at 13:21

Illness has prevented me from doing much in the garden this year but I entered into my greenhouse to find that last Christmas's poinsettia has fresh green leaves.  What should I be doing to it now and is there any chance it will flower again this Christmas?

Thank you so much for all your interest and advice.  You have really cheered me up this morning and I am now seeing that part of the garden with different eyes and I can more easily see that it would make a lot of sense to make more of what I already have.  Yes, I have alchemical mollis in abundance, also golden rod, good king Henry, fuchsia David, geranium Splash Splash, lily of the valley, cowslips, astrantia, iris, peonies, arum lilies, laurel, and daffodil bulbs.  I also have big chunks of Cotswold stone which h I use as stepping stones.

Rob, my husband , really likes the idea of making a raised veg patch for me and has already measured the plot and it is 5 m x 1.8 m.

I can't wait to get started but rain is forecast so I will keep myself busy in the greenhouse   :)

Thank you Jess  :)  yes, I love your ideas and would love to keep the shrubs in the long border and have more grass with daffodils and crocus coming up through it.  The problem is that I planted some woodruff in the garden and it has spread and also the squirrels, bless their little hearts, just love to plant nuts and forget about them so I have an invasion on little trees coming through.  My health problems are subject h at the moment that I get tired so easily and I am also my husbands carer.  I was thinking that the more grass I have, the mowing of it would help keep the little nut trees from growing?

What a quick response. Thank you for taking an interest. Our back garden is some 30 ft wide and 20 fence panels long. The photos are of what was originally the Long Border and the top woodland area of the garden. I won't depress you with the rest yet  :(

Ideally I would like to clear the long border and extend the lawn but have some shrubs like hydrangea . I just need for it to be easier to maintain.

My garden is getting too much for me now and I am at a loss as to how to simplify it.  I feel completely overwhelmed with it . Any ideas and suggestions would be welcome.

Caterpillars

We have found some small brown caterpillars on our young birch tree.  They have a yellow stripe going down the length of the back and a black horn at one end.  Is this a friend or foe?

I would welcome ideas for creating a cut flower border so that I can have a good supply of cut flowers for the house on a tight budget .
