Pruning honeysuckle

Posted: 24/09/2012 at 11:56

I have 2 very healthy honeysuckles in my garden, both of which I planted. One is 2 years old and i have never pruned it back, but it has never flowered. The other was planted at the start of the season and has taken off really well and is flowering now.

i know you are supposed to trim them back, but I dont know how to go about doing this and when to do it. Any advice? thanks

what to do with unwanted plants

I have 2 photinia in my back garden I planted a couple of years ago when i had nothing else to cover my new fence. Now my honeysuckly and clematis are taking off i dont want the photinia anymore but dont know what to do with them. They are in excellent condition and very healthy so would be a sin to waste them and let them die...any ideas?

Too much cement in flower bed

Posted: 06/08/2012 at 11:48

My hubbie is a hard landscaper and has transformed our garden with new fences and patios. I have spent the last 2 summers trying to disguise as much of the new fence as possible with honeysuckle and clematis but there are areas in the beds along the fences where nothing will grow - in fact plants die in certain spots! Ive tried digging down and out away from the fence but the amount of cement he used when putting in the fence posts means there is not much space for planting.

So, my question. what can i plant for good ground cover in between the climbers that dont need to be planted too deep.

Floppy poppies

I have a bed at the back of my garden with paper and a tall country garden yellow flower growing and it looked lovely until the poppies came into flower. They are all floppy - and not just since the windy weather started- and I am so close just to ripping them out and planting something else. The bed just looks a mess now! Any ideas? There is no mention of them requiring support on the info card that came with them!

tomatoes-growbags or not growbags?

Ive always grown my tomatoes in large hanging baskets. i get the tumbling variety and put 2/3 plants in a 16" basket. they hang just outside my kitchen door in a real sun trap and I get tomatoes all summer long!

One of my neighbours asked me for help with her garden as she seems to think i know what I am doing! She wanted a climber for her new fence and trellis so we went to the garden centre and she choose a jasmin. I helped her plant it and i explained they are quite fast growers etc but it really isnt doing an awful lot at all! Lots of the leaves are brown and look rather pathetic and its not growing at all. Her garden is north facing but where it is planted does get the sun.

I feel bad because she asked me for help and its not worked out. Any ideas what we can try?
