Chrysanthemums...

Thanks all, as I say I'm not disappointed, however, the change in colour from one year to the next interests me... how can one plant 'become' three!

Hi Nutcutlet - yes I thought maybe if a white plant, however, at present this all appears to be coming from one root -  until, as you say though I can have a proper rummage around it's difficult to tell... It's the cosmos that interests me too - all the ones in the back garden have turned out white, as they should be!  I did sift soil in these borders from the back garden with some compost mixed in in october 2012... but everything has excelled in here this year from bulbs to later 'adds'.

PS, you can also see the Cosmos planted from GW seed on the left - this however turned out to be pink rather than white...

I planted this chrysanth last year, and bought it a a fiver from the garden centre as it was dying off, but still produced a great display. It was a dark orange when I bought it, nothing out of the ordinary that would leave me to believe it has been dyed, and it was added to our front border, where it has put on a great show this year - see photo!  The only thing is that it has come back with 3 seperate colours, HOW?  Whats happened here - I'm not disappointed as its a lovely plant but was this dyed originally?

Self seeding foxglove...

Leave them be. Once I'd planted one, there are dozens year on year, self setting.  I sometimes catch the seed of one particular colour, but all I do is scatter it elsewhere and it grows. Very low maintenance!

If the site is very exposed, you can pot some up and keep in a greenhouse until spring, but even in an exceptionally cold winter you are unlikely to lose them all!

where are the seeds?

No ripe seeds on my hollyhocks yet, all a bit green and small...

Sparrows!

Posted: 06/10/2013 at 22:00

50 plus sparrows a time visit our garden, and this year as trifid house says, we have had a family of starlings at the feeders - the first since I was a teenager (a long time!). We have wrens, robins, a pair of dunnocks, blue and great tits and the obligatory wood pigeons and ring necked doves.  We occasionally have the odd flock of visiting long tailed tits too; Not to mention of course, the blackbirds!  We are also priveledged to have a pair of Dunnocks who reside year on year. What we are missing however, is a thrush, which 20 years ago was a regular to the garden. Is it me, or are these much less prolific recently?  Either way, a great year for birds which is encouraging - and expensive (don't mind though!) - We also fill the feeders twice daily; increasing the amount of feeders strangely doesn't help!

Leave it be! If there is a hint of frost cover it, but generally very hardy I find!

Grape Vine Care

Posted: 24/09/2013 at 20:48

Hi -

I have sucessfully (thanks to the forum) produced grapes on my vine for the first year, outdoors in a sheltered spot. Last year I overwintered it in the summerhouse.  I can do this again as its only about 6ft tall, and not really intertwined on the trellis.  The question is, WHAT do you prune off; as there are conflicting reports on this one, and HOW do you overwinter it correctly.  I have 2 vines now, one is small and easy to relocate, the other fruit bearing one is vitis sauvignon, (blanc) and it has produced so much fruit that I want to get this right! Can anyone help please?
