can you save seeds from cut flowers?

Posted: 12/01/2013 at 15:53

Thank Sam I have put some chrysanthemums cuttings in water I will wait and see and I have put some in compost pots.

I like buying plants for the garden but the cut flowers were in the house - so I would see if I could do something with them

That's good I have signed up, you get an ID chart which helps - may be some of the brown birds in your garden could be female birds like the female black bird is brown but not if smaller.

ID chart the birds may be on there

Hello nutcutlet

Are you taking part in the garden bird watch on 26- 27 January for RSPB, I did last year interesting to see how many of each bird you can count.  I will this year

Link below

I have a few birds fighting over feeders today and flying around the garden, saw by watching out window.

Hello Hollie hock seeds are up are -,1 x Liatris - purple they take a few years to flower so have to grow on for a while yet and Honesty x3 as 1 more came out today that's good.

It is raining like mad here and has been all night in Southampton and even had large bang of thunder this morning.

Went out yesterday and fed the birds and squirrels so that's OK for now -  will wait to see if it stops raining before going out today.

I did read that larkspur need to be 'chilled' to germinate so sowing ahoy

I have those seeds I did not know they needed a chill so is it good to sow outside then? when not raining I guess

Will try and sow white Ragged Robin today and Snap Dragons indoors got some pots with compost in already.

Whats your plans for the garden this year?

Bjay what a lot of hard work you have done in your garden well done, and nutcutlet you have quite a bit to do with that area,  I had lots of brambles and ivy in one area but removed all the ivy and bramble, hired a rotovator and cleared it ready for a vegetable area.

Sam, my garden is quite long like your garden, and narrow, but in some places even more as a garage takes over a bit, and a path waves through the middle; not sure what I am going to do in the garden -  maybe more planting, seed sowing and growing veg.

Busy- Lizzie what a nice shed, good colour

Sam, do you still have the tyres in your garden?  You could use them and make tyre planters.

My seeds have popped up just a few of them from the seed swap indoors on the window sill, may be I will grow a few more things or may be I should wait a bit - might still be early to sow them.

Something good when they pop up. Yeah

Thanks hollie hock I got my false sunflower and have been outside today planting it in a compost bag- until I know where to plant properly. Looks great.

What time does the false sunflower flower?

T&M seeds came today as well so nice goodies arriving through the post. I want to have a go at a bit more seed sowing but might not yet - the seeds may get too leggy.

Sam that sounds a good way of going about your garden I think -  do it in bits, I manage to do that sometimes then I get put off by something else and do a bit of gardening there as well. Things do distract me.

When is gardeners world back on the TV??
