Dangers of antifreeze to pets & other animals

Posted: 22/09/2012 at 10:09

Unfortunately, it is not always accidental in my opinion, either, as there are gardeners who absolutely hate cats.  It is a really good idea to publicize the problem, and I expect that most cases are down to lack of knowledge.

beetroot eaters

It has been a bit of a bad year for large slugs this year, and I have found slugs eating my beetroot, and just moved them!  However the very best organic solution to the slug problem is to keep ducks!  My garden is bereft of slugs now, as I let the ducks roam freely for an hour or two morning and night.

what can i plant for autumn and winter flowering...and

You can buy some lovely plants that have winter berries on, such as cotoneaster, pyracantha, and I am putting in some young mountain ash trees (sorbus) which will have pretty berries on and pretty foliage in the colder months.  There are lovely trees that have good colour in autumn, and there are things which flower in winter such as helleborus, witch hazel, cyclamen, etc.

Welcome to the fruit & veg forum

Good luck, I have grown tumbling tomatoes in hanging baskets and strawberries.  I grow potatoes in the ground, as I am lucky enough to have an allotment.  I would recommend to everyone the joys of having an allotment.  What fun and hard work it is, and I like the satisfaction of it.  But I do, as Stewart does, still like growing things in tubs and baskets in the garden too.  I am trying globe artichokes this year (all advice appreciated here!!).  And have one asparagus plant in a pot at present - really need to pop it onto the allotment I think.

Talkback: Ground elder

I have inherited ground elder in my new garden. It is covering the rockery, and proving difficult to eradicate. I have spent months digging and hoeing, and have now made a decision to buy a weedkiller in order to save my good plants from this hideous creeping thing!
