MORNING FORKERS

Posted: 15/06/2013 at 06:40

Morning Forkers! Up with the crack of dawn this morning to leave early for our childminding stint. About to leave now. Have a good couple of weeks everyone.

Makes you feel like going ex-directory, Jon. All one's friends have one's number anyway.

James, in Wales we get free subscriptions so the fees are all unfamiliar to me.

TT, I don't actually let them go out and yap! But if they see bigger birds in the garden - pigeons, magpies, seagulls - they have a whale of a time chasing them off and barking at them. Couldn't stop them barking at that time however hard I tried. There is a garden at the bottom of ours where a small dog is allowed to yap to his heart's content and I worry (a bit) that the other neighbours think it is my dogs.

Good Evening FORKERS

Evening all. Certainly didn't need to water plants today! TT - count the asterisks, it isn't the word you are thinking of!

FG, I read your posts about your argument with mothers who let their children invade your garden. I'm sorry you had that upset. I take it you have open plan front gardens in your street? I lived in a house like that once, and it certainly is a cause of discord among neighbours. We made our point by digging borders around the boundary and planting things tall enough to create a psychological barrier. If people are rude and crude enough to shoot their mouths off at you, they won't take much notice of Keep Off signs, unfortunately. We have very young schoolchildren walking to school past our garden every day and routinely I pick up the sweet and crisp packets they drop that get blown into my garden. Often - usually -  their parents are with them when they do it. It is just a casual attitude to good behaviour and they'd be indignant if they were criticised for it. Those women knew they were wrong, in my opinion, they just weren't going to admit it.

Matty, I'm very impressed that you can make a wedding cake. My limit is a lop-sided sponge! One of my SILs made my son's wedding cake and it was gorgeous.

We're away for a few days from tomorrow. Packed the caravan today, in the rain. We're visiting our son and staying on the vast lawn of one of son's church members, with a great view of his beautiful farmhouse. We don't make it past the kitchen door but they come out and drink tea with us on the lawn. It is another world from ours! Nice people, though.

I find two yappy little dogs a pretty good deterrent, but that may be too extreme a solution for most people!

Morning all. I hope the chemo goes OK, Andy.

Absokutely p*******g with rain here. Need to get things ready before I go away but no chance at the moment. Coffee with a good friend this morning, so hopefuly it will have stopped raining by the time I get home.

Verdun, you are absolutely right about getting involved and volunteering.

I don't know if I am right about this, but it seems to me that species roses are much more resistant than hybrids. Also , really well-fed roses are more resistant to everything. Blaack spot is a curse here in Wales, and I'll remember the tip about copper and use it next year. I've been spraying with a systemic fungicide.

Me too, Gardengirl. They're a bit small and vulnerable to go in the garden, yet they may be better off there than in a pot that is vulnerable to drying out in hot weather.

JB, glad you feel better, but your post is a bit mystifying to me. Do you live in Ireland?

Pagey, I sympathise. My elderly neighbour can't look after his garden very well and it is full of dandelions. I was out there spraying my roses along the boundary and he gave me a real telling off. He pointed to a rose of his that had died (of neglect) and claimed I had killed it with the spray. Surprised, I let him rant for a while, then walked away. I'd help him if he was less hostile, but his constant accusations make it difficult to approach him.

I broke the lupin flower off by accident

Posted: 13/06/2013 at 22:10

Hi, PDMI. If it is a young lupin, it is probably better off without its flower. It needs to develop good roots and more leaves to feed them. I've just deliberately taken the flowers off two young lupins of mine. Cut back the stem and let it develop and it may flower again later this year.
