Ash Tree Stump

we had htis with a tree we wanted out.. we gut it down as far as we could.. then stuck copper nails in it.. left it for a year.. and it was dead enough that we dug around the roots and then sawed off the tap root and main big roots.. left them to die on their own and not cause subsidence

but i undersntand you dont have this much time to wait.. so you will have to dig it out.. dig around and down as much of the roots as you can.. then cut off main roots at a level out the way.. then just get the axe to it.. as their roots go long way.. leave main roots to die on their own and the space will fill up wihtout leaving gapping tunels and holes under your ground.

my cosmos are doing well.. keep dead heading and more come..

 maybe cuting off the buds may give them new lease and then flower again.. i know the sun is here now and a bit of summer is on its way.. it is 21c on our shady patio at this time of the morning..yesterday even hotter.. might be worth a go.

@hollie-hock.. my scabious not done too well this year.. as weather hot then wet they have suffered mildew so been cutting them back.. i got 3 on mine at the moment but my giant ones.. dont seem to suffer mildew and they are doing very well.. grew from seed and well impressed with them i am.. gorgeous colours.

laurel hedging

i planted some laurel hedging myself in may.. and it too has lost leaves going yellow and brown.. and not a healthy looking colour.. and i gve them a cut back.. and htey have started sprouting new leaves.. so hang in there.. they might well survive..

The best multi purpose compost this year

i did use j arthurs but foundi got loads of weeds and things growing it in.. i now use westlands and it is fine.. i store mine in a black dustbin and when i open it i can spell the sterilization of it.. no weeds etc in this one.. i have not found it dries out quick thou i water every evening and morning.. so maybe that why.

for my toms etc in greenhouse they are sat in seed tray with no  holes and kept topped up so they never run out.. i also like annie5 put all used compost on the garden or in the compostor..

@slaphead08.. wish our Asda was alrady built.. i love the place and would greatly appreciate taht offer.. as i have westlands best for value and planting this year.. thou i do go and buy some from our local tip..they recycle our waste and then sell it.. bit dearer but very good.. used it for the veg plot and added to pots of perennial plants this year.. i also give them a seaweed feed through the summer as they need a little extra..

hi bev.. nice to invite you in to our gardens.. i also love to look at peoples gardens.. it is great for ideas.. think all gardeners arre the same.... my mum is.

@holli-hock.. yeah they dont survive hard frosts very well.. i only ever get about 1 or 2 hard frosts a year and it kills them.. as i say mine go until november or longer if none.. or snow.... wh ich we dont get much off at all.. the weather is was 24 on tuesday and getting hooter wiht each day already 21 here this morning..

lawn brown ead and dying patches...

yeah guys i know this.. but we have had hardly any rain here..  my water butts were near on empty for the 3rd time this year before the heavy downpour we had monday night. (which is the first proper rain we have had since before olympics )and we have 5 large ones.. ant that filled them.. i am told the shape of the island splits the clouds and the solent and above gets most of it,..i sit looking out over the channel and the rain misses us all the time.. we hardly get frosts.. while my mum on the solent side does.. she has had more rain than us on this side.. for instance wednesday over mums torrential rain for 3 hours in the morning.. i had left my washing out.. i got back home at 2pm and it was bone dry neighbour said we had no rain here.. and it is always like that.

they charge me £15 for the weed and feed..lawn is 50ft x 65ft so big.. and i never water it.. i just mow it and trim edges.. nothing else.. they tell me to water it 3 tims a week but we are on metres over here so cant afford it.

i will be speaking to the boss man next week regarding other peoples lawns and see if it is the fertilizer doing it.. as the little balls that fall on the borders have yet to dissolve.. so thats shows how dry it has been.. the ground is as hard as conrete.. cant dig it with a trowel to get autumn plants in at all..

my lawn was just weeds when took over.. now or it was lush and green and gorgeous.. next doors is lush but not green but a pale yellow green colour.. i have been having company for 2 years now and this is first time the lawn has looked as bad as it did when i started the garden..

i know your not ganging up on me.. and i hope to get answers from the boss when i speak to him on wednesday.. i have taken picutures of the ball so show not disolved etc.. for evidence.. thou guy sid they do not use any chemicals that can damage or scorch lawns.. so we will see.

@hollie-hock.. i think 2/3 of my garden are my own progated or seed sown plants.. i do stuggle with hard wood cuttings thou.. need more practice on those..

i do think white is good inthe shade i also find shasta daisies prefer little more shade they get morning sun and eveing sun and htey love it.. they were in full sun when first planted them and they hated it.. much happier in shade for last 3 years now.. have split them 2 time since.. maybe they will be good in your shady bit..

@hollie-hock.. no. i am sure your rudbeckias are annuals.. may last bit longe rin warmer climate over winter...but mine dont.. if the have hairy slightly prickly feel stems they are annuals.. the perennial ones are  smooth stemmed and more basal in leaves and grow taller.. and single yellow colours normally.. and die down over winter.i may be wrong hopefully someone will come along hwo knows bit more..

my buddlehia is on the shaded side and gets early  morning sun and late evening sun.. but they are very hardy and i always think white looks better in the shade.. seems to make it shine out.. but i think they will grow anywhere.. thou this one has been harder to get cuttings to take from than the purple ones... someone told me walking past other day that white is un common.. must say the scent is to much sweeter than the purples one.. it just wafts across the gardem.. while i am dead heading.

@lillylouise.. your garden always leavs me in awe.. it is just gorgeous..

everyones piccies are great .. i love looking at other gardens.. i always peeping over hedges and walls when out walking... you can learn alot about what grows and what doesnt in you soil.
