can this work as ingredients for compost?

Posted: 01/04/2014 at 09:46

hi

im making the most of a limited garden and of being 3 months pregnant and therefore quite tired, not able to do as much as last year etc. i started a compost bin late last year and it was made of an old lidded black bin which my mum sawed a big hole out of in the bottom. it put some twigs on the bottom which i read were good for aeration then put all kitchen waste fruit and veg in it. i also put in 'compost maker' which i bought on ebay with each fresh layer, and some shredded paper

i have NO garden waste, becuase the garden is mostly paved and the borders are mostly uncultivated and if anything is growing there it is weeds. therefore i have little natural 'brown' waste. so i was planning on adding shredded paper regularly to make up for this.

i got a little clump of compost forming in the early days, but now its just full of flies and rotten fruit and veg! is it because of what i'm putting in?

basically the only things i have to add to the bin are kitchen fruit and veg waste and shredded paper. is that going to work or shall i just give up? if it will work what can i do to sort out the current (lack of) compost?

many thanks for your help!

thanks for all your replies! 3 year old Boo is looking forward to planting the bulbs this weekend.

best thing of all is that i told the company i bought them from that they shouldn't really have despatched them given that i had requested cancellation over a week before they posted them- so they refunded me anyway. so i got the bulbs for free!!

Hi there

I ordered some spring bulbs online and they've only just arrived- on the last date they said they would despatch by Is there any point in attempting to plant them?

Its annoying because over a week ago I emailed to cancel the order and didn't hear back from them, so I cancelled well before they despatched. I know I have legal rights from Distance Selling Regulations but I thought I'd ask you all if there's any point in even having a go with them now. Thing is, I won't get a chance if I do try til a week's time anyway.

is plant food the same as fertiliser? and how can you make plant food?

hello

i'm new to all this gardening stuff but am trying it out!!

ive read a few books that all talk about avoiding fertilisers and going organic as you can. then i read things that tell me to feed my plants and i see things labelled 'plant food' or 'tomato food' or potato food on the shelves. whats the difference?

and has anyone made plant food? i read about for example filling up empty milk bottles and using them water plants, the milky water is like a type of plant food- is there any truth in this??
