Over wintering agapanthas

I have one in the ground and 2 in the soil. I do nothing protectionwise, and they come up better than the year before. Depending on where you ar econditions and protection will vary.

Old rose bush looks awful, pruning ideas please

I cut down the obvious brown/dead stems, and when flowers have finished cut them down as well. I find that I get new growth then flower buds appearing. I think I would cut down the really thorny stems in your pictures and also any stems that are crossing and check from different angles that its a shape that you were after.

Bamboo - what to do?

Posted: 20/08/2017 at 10:44

We have bamboo in our garden. New growth are the tall shoots and ours does the same.

If you don't like having too much bamboo you could cut back some of the smaller leaved one, like you would a shrub or hedge to keep it a manageable shape (I do this).

The middle picture, my father in law has in his garden, and it does pop up occasionally a little distance from the main plant but he just chops it back (he has a very large gravel garden so its easy for him to trace back and deal with it).

Another thing you could do is to trim off the side shoots up to a height of 5-6 feet so that you have two features, nice stems and foliage above to provide a barrier at the end of your garden.

If you are worried about bamboo spreading you can dig down in front of it and put in a barrier which should help or even stop it spreading.

Hope this provides you with some help.

Seed and Plant Swap 2017

Posted: 11/07/2017 at 11:06

Hi All,

one of my bamboos unfortunately flowered this year and now I have hundreds of bamboo seeds. The husband has even managed to get some to germinate in a pot. The bamboo is a phyllostachys variety and in the 13 years it has been in the ground has not gone mad, though it also does well in a big pot. If anyone wants seeds please PM me.

I will be sorting seed and will put a list up when ready. I will hopefully have Knautia and white Scabious available.

I spotted this plant growing in a wall of a very small church on the coast in Wales near Rhoslefain. Does anyone know what it is? (It isn't the ivy to the left).

I would agree with Paul B3 and say Hayloft. I don't know if Sarah Raven do, but worth a look. They always turn up in good condition when I've ordered from there.

What is this?

A Grass, but which one?

I've had this in my front garden for a while but don't know which type it is. It might be a stip but its not Gigantea or Tenuissima.

Bargain Buy of 2015

What has been your best buy? Mine was a flaming katy for £1.00 and a slipper orchid £9.99. Never seen one 'in the flesh' before so hope I can keep it going.

Shrub ID

This has been growing in our hawthorn hedge and this year decided to be 12ft tall with read berries. I thought it migh be a pyracantha but not sure which one as there are no thorns.

Mystery plant at the bottom of my garden. I've never seen this before and it isn't something I planted.
