Our first tomato to ripen (i a growbag in the greenhouse) has got blossom end rot. Is that due to ove or under watering?

Drooping acer leaves

Posted: 08/05/2012 at 13:52

The leaves on an acer platanoides tree which was planted at vour local hospice two years ago have suddenly gone all droopy and limp. We know the ground does get wet where we out it and I wondered if the recent rains have affected it.

Any thoughts on the cause and, more importantly, have we lost it?

Thanks, folks. As I have just reported in another post on cucumbers, the frost killed 3 of my 4 plants that were in the greenhouse. (Two were in growbags and 2 in large pots) Have now bought a plant from the local garden centre - which I am tempted to keep indoors for 2-3 weeks!

3 of the 4 I had in my greenhouse have now died - it was probably the frost 2-3 weeks ago. I resorted to buying a plant from the local garden centre yesterday.

I have just germinated 4 cucumber seeds (Suttons Byblos) in individual pots on a heated seed propagator.  As soon as the seedlings appeared I took the plants off the heat and put them on the window cill. in a bedroom.

The stems are now between 4 and 5 inches long (i.e. before the seedling leaves) and will soon need support I feel. Why does this happen as, when one sees small cucumber plants in garden centres over the next few weeks, their stems below the leaves are minimal?

I presume when I plant them into grow bags I can bury the plants up to the first seedling leaves.

Any thoughts?

lawn edging shears

Re edging lawns. I was told a couple of years ago that one could buy an attachment for edging shears that collected the trimmings as you cut. Our local garden centre was out of stock at the time and since then I haven't bothered to check (lazy or forgetful or what!)

Has anyone else come across such an attachment?

Leggy broad bean plants

I sowed mine in November and despite looking a little droopy first thing in the morning due to the intense cold at present, they pick up during the day. I have already given them small stakes. As they are a dwarf variety I do not intend to pinch out the tops.

Raised vege beds

Posted: 04/01/2012 at 12:12

I use raised beds and spread compost on between Oct and Jan each year. This year I used a recently acquired second-hand electric rotovator to tickle the compost in and will certainly use in the spring when seed sowing to help give a good tilth.

My question is: there is advice now that one should be digging 12" trenches and putting in old newspapers, compost etc for runner beans, but how does this tie in with the general advice that one shouldn't dig raised beds?
