Thank you so much - very helpful.

This is a damp, sandy bed measuring about 8' x 10', surrounded and shaded by a 6' laurel hedge to the south, sheds to east and west and with a steep bank to the north. We'd like to see it full of large evergreen shrubs with some colour, at least in the summer, and would be grateful for planting advice.

There were 2 photos in a folder. Have put both directly into Dropbox now:

ground cover for slope

This is a long narrow slope in front of an alder hedge and next to some steps: poor, sandy soil (but we could improve it with garden compost), mostly in shade. I'd welcome advice on ground cover that would spread quickly - will have to net it at first because hens & ducks are loose in the garden.

how best to reclaim poor land

Posted: 25/07/2012 at 23:24

We have gained access to part of a field behind our garden, which is currently populated with, mostly, Himalayan Balsam, plus brambles and nettles. As a first step, we've had a patch approximately 2 x 4 metres cut down.

We're aiming to use this area for raised beds to grow vegetables. So what to do next? Cover the area in black plastic, or weed suppressing membrane, or what...?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Seems like it is gall mite, which can affect alders - but I can't find any hints on the net as to how to treat this - or whether or not treatment is necessary. Please can anyone suggest anything?
