Tomatoes not Ripening

Posted: 27/07/2013 at 12:49

Can anyone out there help. I have been growing tomatoes for over 35 years and never experienced them being so slow to ripen.  Given the fabulous weather we've been having ripening didn't ought to be a problem. I have just read an article about this problem in the letters of a newspaper. The theory is that the seeds come as far away as New Zealand and California, which are affected by time and seasonal differences. the other thought is that they are freeze dried and packed in foil sachets which are packed and refrigerated far too soon before they have had time to mature.

Has anyone else any thoughts on this, I would be pleased to hear. Thanks

tree bumblebees in a bird box

I had bees in my Blue Tit box last year, they disappeared over winter, and the Blue Tits were back this Spring.  There are also bees in my Mothers Tit box, they must like it in there. Wont be doing anything about it, after all we need the bees, and they seem very buisy pollenating my tomatoes at the moment.

Poor subscriber magazine

I have been taking the GW weekly from my newsagent for at least 25 years, and have watched it grow from a newspaper type seedling, to the magnificent glossy mag we have to-day, and long may it continue. (Wouldn;t know about subscriptions though)

Hedge Identification Please.

Hi Roy Parkes,

I have one of these in my front garden which I have trimmed to a rounded shape.

It started its life as a little shrub in a container arrangement. I can understand these being used as hedging. Unfortunately I dont know what it is despite looking through my Tree and Shrub book. I would presume this is due to the hot weather. Sorry I can't be of more help. I will look through my other books and get back if I can help.

I grow Gardeners Delight every year, and they are very prone to this, I just cut them off, no good the goodness going to the extra leaves.

Clematis

I potted a plant on, (as you do)  just stuck into a pot to see what it was.

It is definitely a Cematis but it has no tendrils. It has small flowers, I wonder what the variety can be, as I havent seen one without tendrils before. Can anyone help?
