Major Garden Overhaul

Posted: 01/01/2014 at 09:40

My back garden contains old bushes and is surrounded on 3 sides by Conifers approx 8' tall, it faces due West/North onto the Bristol Channel. There is a central lawn and I have used an area approx 20' x 15' at bottom for veg growing.  The side borders consist of the old bushes and plants.  The garden is approx 38' long x 25' wide

I would like to have the whole thing re-designed and planted in cottage garden style flowers, with a veg area and some bushes (to encourage the birds), does anyone have any idea what costs would be involved and where to find help to do the project?

I know it may be too late for your crop this year, but I always pinch out beans when they get to top of the 6' canes, and I grow sweet peas along side the beans to attract the insects that pollinate, and keep on picking every day as that will stimulate plant to produce more.

I dig a trench & fill up with kitchen scraps for a few months before putting out plants, and never use same site in the garden in subsequent years. I know that some think this is a waste of time, but my dad always did this and always had a good crop.

I have managed to outwit the darn pigeons and grown some lovely looking cabbage, but when I came to start harvesting found they looked a bit "holey"...found tiny slugs in them (or was it some relative of the cabbage white butterflies that are prolifice this year?...they must have heard I planted cabbage)

- has anyone got an opinion on the mats I have seen advertised that have a copper content to deter slugs/snails?, before I plant my next crop

Red Robins turning green?

Posted: 21/07/2013 at 10:01

I have 2 Red Robins which are about 6 or 7 feet tall, and the leaves are turning from red to green, is this due to the heatwave and is there anything that needs to be done or will it sort itself out?
