Hmm blackbirds could well be the culprits. But why only those berries and not the others?

We have 2 or 3 hedgehogs that visit our garden nightly. We leave out dry hedgehog food on a little saucer on one of the paving slabs.. when they come along they stand on the saucer and tip it up, making a 'chink' sound on the paving slab which we hear from our bedroom... it always makes us smile.

Does anyone know what could possibly be eating my redcurrants? I bought a new little bush earlier in the year which is now about 2 feet high and planted it in a gap amongst the already established blackcurrants and raspberries. But in the last week or so something or someone has eaten almost all the new little redcurrant berries that were hanging from it The thing that is baffling me is that whatever it was left the thousands of blackcurrants and raspberries and just went for the few redcurrants I had. There is no bird poo anywhere around there to give any clues.

Any ideas?

(I have since covered everything with netting!)

What's wrong with my clematis? And what can I do?

Got rid and planted a new one, which is (so far) growing beautifully!

Thanks for the advice. I'm reluctant to cut it down to the base Obelixx as its taken 2 years to grow since last cut down! Maybe I will try cutting out the dead bits and feed it and see what happens. I guess I can cut it down if all else fails. Its such a shame after waiting so long!

Never heard of garlic water for slugs! I go out daily to collect slugs and snails from the garden. Its become a bit of an obsession!

Hi all,

So this clematis we inherited didn't flower at all last year but looked really leafy and healthy. This year it developed some buds (presumably on last year's growth) but then suddenly went all yukky and started turning brown. Initially I thought it was some kind of bug as some of the buds seem to have holes in as if they have been nibbled. But almost all of it has now turned brown and crispy and the smaller buds have shrivelled up completely. Looks like there is only going to be one lonely flower Any ideas what could have caused this? And is there anything I can do to save it?

Thanks Nut and Dove. I will be brave and cut them right back in Spring. How exciting. I look forward to seeing what happens!

Ahh ok, that makes sense. And If I cut the old wood back to the ground it wont die?

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. Actually the base of the plant has about a foot of shrubby looking old wood (best way I can describe it). This makes me wonder if it is a cornus, because the ones Ive seen pics of seem to have stems coming straight from the ground. If it IS a cornus, I presume I can't cut the old wood down to the ground, or can I?  Or is there anything else it could be??
