Ideas for replacement shrub needed

Posted: 17/10/2014 at 10:06

Mind also boggling! So many to choose from, thank you all for the suggestions. Pyracantha I like, but other half doesnt like the spikiness, and I guess I would worry my dog would scratch herself on it! We have a few pittosporums (at least I think thats what they are!), seem to be slow growers though? We also have an eleagnus ebbingei which has the most gorgeous scent at this time of year but would be far too dark for that corner.

I'm liking the look of some of the Viburnums, although they look a bit small... will do a bit more research into how fast they grow etc.

Kaffir Lily?

Brilliant, thanks for all the advice. Going to look for some corms and give them a go! We have a shady area at the back under some pine tress but I'm guessing it will be too dry for them... will find somewhere else I'm sure!

Kaffir Lily?

I recently saw an article in the gardening section of the Telegraph about the Kaffir Lily. Never heard of it before. Looks really pretty and apparently great for Autumn colour.

However I've also heard conflicting advice as to how quickly it spreads. Some say it is slow to establish and others that it is fast and invasive. Does anyone have experience of this? Everything seems to be slow to establish in my garden!

Also how is it planted? Seed? Plant?

Any help appreciated as always.

Fairy, sorry for delaying in response. Thank you for suggestions. However we already have all that you mentioned elsewhere in garden!! Still looking for ideas. Am I right in thinking it would be best to plant a shrub at this time of year? or does it depend what it is?

We are chopping down this big fir tree from beside the fence as it's hideous (amongst other reasons!) and need ideas for a replacement shrub or robust climber. We want something around 6 - 8 ft tall to provide privacy and screen out the neighbours shed. Preferably fast growing (ie we don't want to wait 5 years). It is west facing so will get full sun at the top but partial shade at bottom. Soil is dryish although that could be due to fir tree currently sapping the moisture. Here is a pic of how it is at present:

Transplanting a Leycesteria (Himalayan Honeysuckle)

Excellent, thank you all. They seem to be so sturdy and grow anywhere! And yes a pheasant berry not a partridge!

B&Q used to do bright orange garden tools. No chance of losing them (unfortunately!)

Transplanting a Leycesteria (Himalayan Honeysuckle)

Anyone have any idea if it is possible to transplant a Leycesteria (Himalayan Honeysuckle). We have several dotted around, but there is a small one about 2 foot tall that is in the wrong place so we would like to move it. Has anyone tried this? Would I need to cut it back first? And what time of year is best? (I'm guessing Autumn, but this is a guess!)
