Plants needed for heavily shaded area under fir trees

Posted: 18/05/2015 at 10:34

I have an area of about 5x5m at the back of the garden, under fir trees (so fairly dry), and pretty much never gets any sun. At the moment there are bluebells growing there, the odd ornamental grass (which I don't really like) and some sickly looking yellow iris things. Any idea of what plants I could put in that would spread and cover the ground, but also would not invade other areas of the garden, and if possible be robust enough for a dog to run through!

Lately I have been noticing some lovely leaves growing low to the ground in peoples' gardens and along rivers. I'm pretty sure what I'm seeing in Petasites fragrans. I think they're such pretty leaves and they'd look lovely somewhere near our pond. However I have read that they can be a bit invasive. Can anyone give advice on whether I should put some in, or will I regret it? Are they really that bad?

You got there first! Yes, I stand corrected. That is very cool... and slightly disgusting!

Edd, I've just googled it... Wikipedia says leather jackets can be found in water!

Noooo I don't think it is... they have been in there for a few weeks and there are several of them. I'm pretty sure they sure they are in the intentionally. They look pretty happy!

Over the last few weeks I have noticed several of these little grubs in our wildlife pond. Anyone have any idea what they could be?

Will a Lavatera work in partial shade?

Hi all, I have a gap in a north west facing border, backed by a 5 foot fence.. so the ground level is in shade most on the day until late afternoon, but the top of fence is in sun most of day. I'm looking for a fast growing shrub, preferably which flowers in summer. I saw a Lavatera 'Barnsley' which would look lovely there, however it says it needs 'full sun'. Any ideas if it would work in the area I want it to? Is it likely to go leggy? or not flower? Otherwise, any other ideas for the spot?
