You may want to take a look at chaemoneles too (flowering quince) - beautiful blossom, doesn't get too big and quince jelly is pretty tasty too!

summer bulbs for shade

I have an east facing bed that doesn't get a lot of sun but did well last year with gladioli, allium (sphaerocephalon) and crocosmia. Crocus website says crocosmia is okay in partial shade so may well be worth a punt. You may be able to leave them in the ground over winter, too. In fact, you can search the crocus website for bulbs that like light shade and flower in eg July = 35!

Hampton Court Family Garden Competition

I'm tinkering with a design for this.  Not really done this sort of thing before, I believe the RHS will be providing the plants but I don't know how they're going to make them look established etc.  Its weird trying to do a plan like this as you would usually get some inspiration from the house / style and any existing features.  8 x 8 is such a blank canvas!

Hanging/trailing plants in full shade - any advice?

I grow trailing fuschias on my north facing wall, don't seem to have any problems with them.  Hardy (perennial) Geraniums are good in shade too.
