I got my enstee in May when it was around 30cm tall, it is now September and the plant including its pot is over six foot in height with massive paddle shaped leaves that were getting bigger with eachnew leaf, I feed it a high nitrogen feed every week and I keep moving it into larger and larger containers. As you can imagine the rate of growth has been phenomenal, however all of a sudden its next two emerging leaves are opening out smaller and have spits in them before they have even unfurled....I think I read somewhere that overfeeding can cause banana to strangulate, is that what is happening ? Or have I somehow under feed ? I have given a couple of doses of tomato feed here and there too.

Anemone Blanda

Thanks greenfingers steve - That makes me feel better knowing you were able to get them growing so late - I will plant them in large celled seed trays to start them somewhere dry then move them into position once they start  grow.

Anemone Blanda

Hi Everyone

Im posting this because I have a couple of questions that are bothering me. I bought around 1000 Anemone Blanda 'Blue Shades' in the late December bulb sales online, the bulbs looked great they arrived along with crocus, tulips, daffodil and some others that I got cheaply. I planted my Anemone Blanda into a raised bed that had been newly filled with fresh compost. Now its late February and my late planted crocus are flowering away and the tulips, daffs and other bulbs are all making good headway but when I dug up a few Anemone bulbs to see why there were no sign of sprouts I found they were a squidgy disgusting my total horror Iv found that every single one I have dug up so far has rotted like this and so my dream of a blue carpet has been flushed down the pan...why did my mass planting fail like this ? Was it due to the late planting ? ....some Anemone Blanda 'White Splendour' that I planted in early October into terracotta pots is doing marvellously well and are coming into it a timing thing with this type of anemone ?

On to the second part of the conundrum...I was looking on another bulb suppliers web site today (very reputable supplier) and to my amazement they had Anemone Blanda 'Blue Shades' for sale now my hopes of a blue carpet have still not left me, so I rang them up to ask if it was ok to plant anemone blander in late February, to which the lady said yes that it is perfectly ok to plant anemone blanda at this time of year, so not to be beaten by my rotting bulb ordeal, I have ordered 500 more my blue carpet dream going to become a reality ? Or is planting them now a total waste of time ? and why the rot in the first place, my site is well drained and in dappled shade ? There seems some confusion on the net so to clarify Im interested specifically in Anemone Blanda.

How long do Lupins live?

Posted: 05/07/2013 at 07:51

I bought some half dead lupin seedlings this year from homebase, they were supposed to be £9.50 for 6 plants but they were selling them for 50p for 6. I could see all they needed was water and I was right, I got them home watered and potted them on and put them under a poly tunnel until late may. Well I have about 55 lupin plants this year and they have been amazing. They are only Russel Hybrid ones but I have never had lupins like it and I suppose thats why I would be sad to lose them - never mind how much it would cost to replace them in those numbers to fill that site ! I was looking at some West Country lupins at the gardne centre the onther day and they were £9.00 each !

Hollie hock - when I say I lose a few every year what happens is they start to shoot in spring and then if the spring is too cold and wet the new little shoots start rotting off at the base. I think I will do what Verdun suggests and pot them then plant them out at the end of March. This year has been so cold all the early summer flowes like foxgloves are still in mid season when they would normally be over so I don't think that the long cold spring has helped matters.

I have MOLES !!

Won't they tunnel deeper and go under the slabs ? I have heard of some American people who dig really deep ditch and pour concreate all round the perimeter of the garden ! I think I will just have to leave them to get on with it and hope the dog catches them to keep the numbers down.

So I guess there is no hope of getting rid of them then,  I will just have to learn to live with pushed up soil and poor lupins have all been dispalced its really upsetting me

I have moles digging up my flower beds pushing up plants and damaging roots making stuff wilt. I have got a sonic nose maker, I have tried the mole repellent with caster oil, I have a dog who digs them up and has caught 3 this summer and yet every day I go down and there is more mole damage !

Nothing seems to get rid of them and the dog does not scare them either, from what I read they are supposed to be solitary animals yet none of the information about moles I have found seems to be true and certianly there seems to be nothing that will rid my garden of them

I want to dig my lupins up in late summer and pot them up for the winter as I have clay soil and they dont seem to like overwintering in it I normally lose a few every year. Do you think if I dig them up in say late Aug and put them in clay pots for the winter that would work ?
