Thank you for your kind comments about my pics Beaus Mum.  I'll get some into the gallery when I find the time.

You may be right punkdoc.  I'm in Harrogate.  Where are you?  Thank you for the advice Verdun.  I shall act on it.  After all I suppose they won't die if I cut them back.   Nothing venture, nothing gain!

Cutting down perennials for a second crop of flowers

I have a lovely clump of Astrantia Roma and when the flowers had gone over in early July I cut off all the flowering stalks, hoping for a second crop.  Now I'm wondering whether I should have cut down all the foliage as well.  What do you think?

The other plants I'm not sure what to do with, are scabiosa caucasica, which have been blooming for several weeks, but look to be producing very few more buds.  How low should I cut them down?

I could understand it if the birds went for open flowers to get to the insects, but these are quite tiny buds neatly nipped off their stalks and then left completely untouched on the ground or patio

Thanks Tanty, I shall have to get some water pistols and hope that they will work!

This year I have grown nasturtiums for the first time.  They are the primrose coloured variety, growing at the front of several beds around the patio, and are just full of buds - or should I say "were".  I have just counted 9 little forlorn looking buds scattered on the patio, near the plants.    I didn't see the criminals responsible, but guess it was pigeons.  Does anyone else have this problem, and can anyone suggest a sensible solution?  I can already think of the facetious ones, so don't even go there!

Surprise tomato plant!

Sorry I haven't been around for a few days - just very busy!  My tom plant is now about 14" tall.  I've taken a couple of pics, and since then I have pinched out the sideshoots.  What I'm concerned about is the white marbling on the leaves.  Should I be worried?

Thanks for all the advice.  I will also have a look at the RHS site, Alan.

Advice please for a cuttings newbie!

I have never taken cuttings before, mainly because I haven't had anything to cut from!  I know there is plenty of advice around in magazines and the web, but some of it is conflicting and I know you lovely people won't mind giving me the fruit of your experience. I'm wanting to multiply my plants of Penstemon "Raven" and Dianthus "Memories".  I need to know all the ins and outs - cut above or below node, size of pot, best compost, grit or no, plastic bag over top? Not asking much, am I?
