So...............

Posted: 26/04/2016 at 18:08

Have just spotted this thread, but haven't time to read every post.  To get back to the original question as to why people start answering a question with the word So, I think it probably came over from America.  It started amongst younger people in the business world, and now politicians and interviewers on radio and tv use it all the time.  It's replaced the word Well and annoys me no end.  I've given up shouting Well at the radio every time someone starts a reply with So.

Hints on growing Dianthus, please

Thanks everyone.  I will get some grit and mushroom compost!

Verdun, can I use mushroom compost when planting any other shrubs or plants, or is it best used just as a mulch?

Hints on growing Dianthus, please

Last year I planted some Dianthus "Memories".  They flowered well, but then the stems started going white and the leaves shrivelled.  So i cut them back, but although they had a second flush, the flowers were rather tatty.  This spring they still looked awful so I've got rid of them.

I believe they prefer chalky soil, whereas mine is clay.  I have just bought some of the Gran's Favourite variety.  How can i improve their chances of survival?

Thanks in advance,

Happy

Sorry, I put this in the wrong part of the forum.  I've now pasted it into the Plants section of the forum, but can't seem to delete this one.

Please could you post any replies to  the discussion in the Plants section - thank you.

I already have some upright lavender Hidcote in a narrow bed, which is great.  But there's another area of the garden next to the patio where I would like to plant some looser, more sprawling lavender. This area only has about an 8" depth of soil, but I guess this should be enough. It gets sun all day. Which lavenders would you recommend?

Thanks for all the help everyone.  I went to my local garden centre, and bearing in mind what Dave Morgan had said, bought some Toprose granules, which was the only one that mentioned extra magnesium.
