Anybody else growing sunflowers?

Posted: 26/07/2015 at 21:37

I don't grow sunflowers - they just arrive!  Some in my pots, some in the flower beds.  I can't wait to see what colour the flowers will be!

Hi Verdun, yes it does have a wonderful scent.  I think the "mildew" goes right down to the base, so I shall be cutting the foliage off at ground level.  I have three plants in a row, but only the two outside ones are affected.  Yet they've all been treated exactly the same!  No need to water today though as we've just had an almighty downpour!

I have three of these, planted last summer.  They have flowered very well this year but two of them have gone all whiteish brown at the bottom third of their stems, which looks very ugly.  What has caused this, and do I ditch them?  The photo below was taken a month ago, and if you zoom onto the base of the plant you will see its beginning to turn brown.

A Shropshire Lad rose

Hi pansyface, thanks for the tips.  I've looked for buds but can't see any.  Whereas my Wollerton Old Hall roses have loads of new buds in the leaf axils. I would give ASL 8/10 for perfume, in comparison with my Munstead Wood roses which get 10/10.  WOH has a strong perfume which DA describes as like myrrh, but I would call it citrus.  It's a brilliant performer, but I have to say I was  a bit disappointed with the perfume.

Now that the first flush is almost done, will it flower again?  Do I have to feed it?  What about pruning?  ( I've been removing dead flowers daily)  Actually I have 4 bushes - one at each corner of my pergola.  The one in the ground has flowered its socks off, while the three in large pots have not done nearly as well.  Any advice very welcome. Here's a pic (hopefully) of the one in the ground, taken two weeks ago.

Does spraying them with diluted washing up liquid work for the black ones like it does for the green ones?

They are in amongst small love in a mist seedlings Dove, so I don't think the hosepipe is an option.

Too late I'm afraid, Landlubber. They were much too close to some favourite plants, so in the end they had to go!
