Runner beans - masses of flowers, only ONE bean.

Posted: 02/10/2013 at 12:25

Am pleased to report that eventually I had a bumper crop of runner beans and twining stems reaching up to the half landing window! (see photo).  I've left a few to mature on the plant for beans to plant next year.  Do you have to wait till the pods turn brown before picking, and how long does that take?  Most of the leaves have now dried/dropped off.  Should I continue watering until the pods are ready to harvest?

Dahlias - do they all have tubers?

Posted: 28/09/2013 at 10:22

Yes Blairs, I have.

I'm wondering if anyone else has bought any of these Happy Days dahlias.  They come in various very bright colours with dark purple foliage. I googled them and found they were sometimes described as annuals and sometimes as tuberous perennials.  As I have dug them up with a ball of soil to put them in a pot whilest still in flower, I'm wondering if there are some tubers hiding in that soil.  Are there usually roots at the bottom ends of tubers?

Well Verdun, hopefully someone will be along shortly to answer that question!

Keeping Cosmos Flowering for Wedding

Helen, are you wanting to use them as cut flowers for your wedding or the reception, rather than just to make your garden look floriferous?

Dahlias - do they all have tubers?

I bought three dahlias of the "Happy Days" series from B&Q in June as space fillers and they have been fantastic, growing to over 2' with masses of blooms. They still have lots of buds, but I need to dig them up to plant bulbs. The first plant has been removed and transferred to a pot, but it didn't have tubers, only roots.  Is this a new annual form?

"Plant in ericaceous compost" not specific enough!

I have an azalea 'snow pearl' to plant and I have some ericaceous compost, but being new to this game, I need to know how much ericaceous compost I need to put beneath and around this shrub. Please enlighten me!

Sky Rocket is obviously made of sterner stuff Dove and benefitted from the bubblewrap blanket.  Do you have a photo of it in bloom this summer?

Well, if you want some advice straight from the horse's mouth ...... I was at Harrogate Flower Show today and went to ask the lady on Hoyland Plants about caring for Agapanthus in pots, because I had bought 3 Arctic Star plants from them at the Spring Show.  She said to put them under cover (shed/garage, greenhouse etc) in November and keep them dry.  Don't water them at all.  But it may depend on the variety you are growing and where you live.

Good Evening FORKERS

Yes, a good plug from Monty for Harrogate Flower Show.  It rained most of the day, which meant I got to go home a bit early, as I was on the final shift in the Perennial Plant Creche and nearly all the plants had been collected half an hour before closing time

I've bought 3 of these plants at Harrogate Flower Show today.  I think they will need support when bigger, but wonder if I could plant them where they could get support from other plants, as I don't want to use stakes.  Any ideas?
