Brown shoots on crocus corms - will they flower?

I thought the shoots should be creamy white, roundish and firm if they were still going to flower?

Brown shoots on crocus corms - will they flower?

Posted: 26/10/2013 at 21:42

A few weeks ago I bought a lot of crocus corms, but haven't been able to start planting them till today.  The variety Cream Beauty have thin little yellowish brown shoots. Would it be a waste of time to plant them, or is there still hope?

It is about 20'' tall from the top of the compost to its highest tip.  It has 3 stems and is in a 9cm deep pot.  So, plant now, or in a year's time?  One other thing - how far away from the lilac could it be planted?  I'm not sure if I can dig a hole deep enough with all the tree roots around.  Woud it be better to grow it in a deep pot?

Right Obelixx, I shall go out and measure it and report back later!

Clematis Polish Spirit

I have a lilac tree, roughly 12' tall.  I've left the dead heads on as I can't reach most of them anyway.  And, I have a small Polish Spirit plant in a small plastic pot (part of a final day bargain lot at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show).  If I plant it hoping it will grow through my lilac and provide colour after the lilac flowers are over, will it be easy to remove the top growth from the tree when I eventually prune the clematis down to 8" in March 2015?  Or do I risk damaging the new lilac buds in the process?

I blame the garden gnomes

Runner beans - masses of flowers, only ONE bean.

Posted: 02/10/2013 at 12:25

Am pleased to report that eventually I had a bumper crop of runner beans and twining stems reaching up to the half landing window! (see photo).  I've left a few to mature on the plant for beans to plant next year.  Do you have to wait till the pods turn brown before picking, and how long does that take?  Most of the leaves have now dried/dropped off.  Should I continue watering until the pods are ready to harvest?

Dahlias - do they all have tubers?

Posted: 28/09/2013 at 10:22

Yes Blairs, I have.

I'm wondering if anyone else has bought any of these Happy Days dahlias.  They come in various very bright colours with dark purple foliage. I googled them and found they were sometimes described as annuals and sometimes as tuberous perennials.  As I have dug them up with a ball of soil to put them in a pot whilest still in flower, I'm wondering if there are some tubers hiding in that soil.  Are there usually roots at the bottom ends of tubers?
