Anemone Coronaria

Posted: 04/12/2013 at 17:10

60 down, 40 to go.  I finished planting for the day in the dark. Hopefully I have spaced out the corms fairly well, but they aren't the easiest things to see against the earth, are they?

Apart from the times that they flower, is there any difference in numbers of flowers and impact, between planting in late Autumn or waiting till Spring?

Which part of the country are you in, Lyn?

Beguiled by the beautiful photos of these beauties in Sarah Raven's catalogue, and helped by sale prices and a 20% off voucher, I bought 100 corms (20 of each in 5 different colours).  I was thinking of planting them in a mild spell this week or next.  Sarah recommends soaking them overnight, but are they going to survive frosty and snow covered ground for weeks on end - as we have been promised up here in North Yorkshire - or will they just go mouldy?

Ok, we are now into December, and apart from one reddish tinged leaf, all the others are pale yellow and beginning to drop. Is this what I am to expect in future?

I planted one of these back in May and have been looking forward to fiery red leaves for several weeks now, but they are still just pinky green.  Is it because it's a young plant - just under 2' high, or perhaps because it's in a part of the garden that doesn't get any sun between October and February?

Great offers in bulb sale at Sarah Raven at the mo.  Just got 40 tulips and 100 anemone coronaria for £27.64 - original price £39.35.  Had some of her sweet pea plugs in April - one variety was naff and they were replaced without question.  But today the website didn't allow me to complete the order and I had to finish on the phone:  long wait before I got through, and person at the other end was rather clueless and her computer kept freezing.  Not good enough Sarah!

HJ, have you added to the bag during the year?  That would make the top ones still crispy.

This time last year Monty was saying to put them in a plastic bag, add a small amount of water, pierce some holes in the bag and fold the top over loosely.  Certainly worked for me!  Tonight on GW he said put them in an open chicken wire container. so I guess there's more than one way to skin a cat (or make leaf mould)    What do other people do?

Thanks for the replies!  Dove, it's a large pot and a small shed, so I don't think that's possible    So I will have to remove the pods from the vine.  Would it be better to dry them off indoors, rather than in the shed?
