Bare Root Wallflowers

Posted: 04/11/2014 at 08:23

Wallflowers all planted.  The variety I got is called Giant Pink.  Disappointed to now discover that Sarah Raven says they are not scented, although several online companies that sell them say they are.    Has anyone on here grown them?

Thanks Verdun!

Ww, thanks for the advice and the compliments.  I had never thought of using a square pot to lessen the risk of it being blown over - good one!

And here is a photo which includes the pot (though the bottom inch or so is below the top of the soil to keep it steady in windy Harrogate!)

I have 3 Arctic Star agapanthus which I planted in a pot last spring, giving them just a little elbow room, but not too much.  They flowered beautifully - see pic.  The pot was standing in a flower bed, and when I came to move it today I discovered that the plants' roots had gone through the bottom of the pot and about 4" into the soil.  Should I repot the plants into a deeper container next spring?  The trouble is, I have problems moving large pots around, and Steve of Hoyland Plants said to bring them under cover in November.  Looks like a no win situation.

Thank you one and all.

Verdun, what in the way of soil or compost should I use for the plants going into pots?

Bare Root Wallflowers

I have bought some bare root wallflowers from our local Council's Nursery.  They always grow too many plants for Harrogate's parks and gardens, and so they sell off the surplus to the public.

As I haven't grown bare root wallflowers before, I was wondering what to put in the planting holes.  Also should I mulch them once planted?  Some will be going in the borders (clay soil with remnants of mushroom compost)  and others will go in pots.

Looking forward to a bit of help  - if you haven't all disappeared in the direction of Verdun's house!

Oh my goodness, I'm really spoilt for choice now, aren't I?  I think I'll have a look at your Qualcast one, thecatsmother.  Thank you so much for posting the pic and link.
