So, does nobody grow this, or have any advice?  Or are you just too busy gardening or sunbathing?

This was an impulse buy at Harrogate Spring Flower Show, 3 plants for the price of two.   I thought I could find out what conditions it likes on the net, but information is very scanty.  So can anyone tell me what soil conditions it likes and whether it can cope with a fair amount of shade?

Sunseeker, start a new thread with your request.  It is more likely to get comments with its own title, than buried here alongside Sarah Bernhardt    Also, if you can give a bit more information, about the kind of soil you have and whether you want shrubs for sunny or shady spots, that would be helpful.

Chicky,  I copied and pasted part of your post, but why has your smiley been transformed into a question mark?

I'd seen this shrub in an Open Garden last year and loved it, then forgot all about it until someone (Busy Lizzie?) posted a pic of theirs.  So I have bought one and it's about 30" high with several thin stems all taped to a cane.  When I've planted it - hopefully tomorrow - do I then remove the cane, cut off the green tapes and let the stems flop where they want to?  There are quite a few open flowers and buds. Here's what it looks like in its pot.

Support for Sarah Bernhardt

Thanks for the pics Fairygirl - very ingenious.

Obelixx, I'm inclined to wait and see what happens - they might not even flower this year, though I hope they will!  Fingers crossed for flowers for you INNA!

Chicky, am very impressed with your man's handiwork.  Is he planning to go into large scale production?  Plenty of customers on here I should think!

Thanks Fairygirl - look forward to the pic!  I've just realised I've put this in the wrong category, so have copied it into a new post in the Plants section.

I've never grown peonies before, but last May I bought three Sarah Bernhardts which didn't flower last year, but look more promising this year with more stems, and they're growing fast.  They are planted separately - not as a group.  What sort of support do you recommend for them?  I don't want the rusty look expensive ones, but I don't have any suitable twiggy bits.  What works for you?
