Penstemon cuttings

Posted: 08/10/2014 at 09:13

This is my first shot at taking cuttings of any sort.  Recently Monty demonstrated taking penstemon cuttings on GW and at the end said, "Put the pots somewhere warm."  I was going to put them in my polycarbonate cold growhouse as I don't have a greenhouse.  Will they root in there, up in North Yorkshire? Should I put polythene bags over the pots? Do I need to mist them as Monty said?  Should I mix grit in with the MPC?

One other slightly related question.  I have so many small used plastic pots of varying sizes and I've often wondered whether a 3"/9cm pot refers to the base or top diameter measurement.  There again, there are deep ones and shallow ones with the same base measurement.  How deep a pot do I need for cuttings?

Sorry for so many questions.  I only want to do what's best for my little ones!

Digging up daffodil bulbs to replant

Thanks Dove, the fork was so much better!  All now replanted.  Nothing more I can do now, except wait and hope.

I've started to dig up some bulbs because they are in the wrong place and am going to replant them elsewhere.  Because i can't tell their exact positions I have managed to slice a bit off the side of a few of them. Will these ones still grow happily?  The shoots are still intact.

Last autumn I planted a dozen Narcissus Spring Dawn near to the front of a border. They didn't start blooming till late March and the leaves didn't completely die down till the end of June.  The flowers were really lovely though and long lasting.  Is it too late now to move them to the back of the border?

Thanks Berghill.  I hope I don't damage the muscari leaves when I plant the pansies - which I still have to buy.

No, Lyn, they haven't flowered.  Do they need some soil around the roots to transplant successfully?  Or, if I give them a haircut (how short?) in situ, and just put compost and pansies on top of them, will they grow new leaves and flower next Spring?

Last March I had two pots like this by my front door.  In early summer I removed the dying pansies, and with them the soil from the top half of the pot, leaving the bulbs in situ to come up again next Spring, with the aim of adding more compost and a new top layer of pansies this autumn.  But I now find that the muscari have already sent out 4" tall green leaves!  So I will probably have to start again from scratch.  Can I successfully transplant the muscari into the garden? Any tips?

Thank you for your kind comments about my pics Beaus Mum.  I'll get some into the gallery when I find the time.
