Pruning/cutting a 50yr apple tree

Posted: 02/02/2014 at 14:05

Hello Dovefromabove,

Many thanks for the web addresses etc. Unfortunately the tree is very close to an equally ancient mixed  hedgerow -  Privet, Holly, Blackberry, Bay- almost everything bar the kitchen sink and all but the Privet self seeded. The other side (our neighbours) stands a very tall Silver Birch whose overhanging branches we cut to light the apple. Pipistrelle bats roost in the Birch. Do you know if we tell the local council we will get it protected from development?

Sorry to stray off the subject,

Haras

Pruning/cutting a 50yr apple tree

We have a cooking apple tree. It's old -quite possibly  58years old. It crops very well, We pruned it hard 3 years ago however one branch now needs chopping back by 2-3 feet as it's slowly  pulling the tree over with the weight of fruit. Is it too late? Is there a danger of infection ? I don't want to kill the tree. Incidently any ideas how I can get some mistletoe to take on the tree?

Thanks,

Haras

Wisteria climbing inside!

Hello,

HELP.

Our Wisteria (25 years old and old friend) isclimbing in and has pushed a double glazed window off its hinges!!  It will no longer shut properly . Can I cut the plant back to the main stem or will this kill it? It holds fond memories so I don't want to take it right out.

Many thanks,

Haras

Can I prune a Ginko Tree?

Posted: 10/07/2013 at 10:27

Hello ,

I've just learnt that a Ginko tree survived Hiroshima so can represent @Survival/Hope to come'. Having one in the garden would help me through a very bad time.  Can I prune it to keep it a manageable size or will it grow in a pot? The latter sounds like hard work and not very rewarding!

Any ideas please?

Many thanks,

Haras

Thanks for all your tips. I'll move the plant, water it less and give it a little food. I suspect it needs all of these. Thanks again everyone.

Hoya tips

About 13years  ago I  inherited my hoya from my Dad. Its positioned out of direct sun in a warm room. Dad got plenty of flowers. I've had none. A cutting from my plant flowered for a friend!!!Asking succesful growers for tips has proved unsuccessful.   Last year in desperation  I divided it and gave it a good prune. It is positioned out of direct sun in a warm room. I feed it with orchid food. I don't want to bin it but... ! Any ideas please? Many thanks.
