Looking for a ground cover plant

Posted: 17/02/2015 at 14:54

Hi All,

I'd like some advice/suggestions please.

I'm looking for a ground cover plant, must be evergreen, which is hardy, can just get on with it, grows as the name suggests, on the ground, not very tall, which will grow in either partial sun or partial shade in heavy soil in a woodland garden. Needs to be a rampant grower too, it needs to cover a large area quickly.

Not fussed if it flowers or not and the need for a rampant grower is so I have to buy a lot less of them given the area I want to cover!

Thank you in advance, Heather

I didn't Oneofseven unfortunately I missed it. I really must remember about it next year and make sure I get it done. I did it last year. Tree Creepers are just great aren't they? To be honest though, I'm happy whatever bird I'm watching (not so keen on the mob mentality of the pigeons or magpie's, don't get me wrong, I like both but when there's so many of them!!) and life would be absolutely awful without birds. Our dawn chorus is quite something too!

We're woodland not Farmland Alan Up North so that explains why we don't see any of those!

And the chaffinch's! Strangely I haven't seen one today, but on a good day there are too many of those to count too!

Hi all,

So far today in my garden (back) I've seen (at one point all at the same time):

4 Crows

5 Magpies

1 Jay

2 Collared Doves

2 Wood Pigeons

1 Feral Pigeon

2 Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers

3 Robins

1 Nuthatch

4 Blackbirds

Blue Tits/Great Tits - too may to count!

As I'm writing this the Collared Doves have just flown back in again, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is eating our home made bird food out of the food tray on the ground and 2 Robins are trying to kill each other!

A short while ago in my front garden (all at the same time) I saw

12 Magpies (grrr)

9 Wood Pigeons (grrrr)

2 Jackdaws

3 Crows

2 Blackbirds

1 Robin

Blue Tits/Great Tits - too may to count

Also seen daily but not so far today:

Treecreepers (I love these guys)

Black Caps

Springwatch/Autumnwatch wouldn't be short of material here! Its like a menagerie!

What am I?

Thanks Punkdoc. It is planted in an area of the garden that gets sun (at least when Mr. Sunshine decides to show his face in the afternoon!), so that should be OK. Our back garden would not give it enough sun I think and also due to its size it isn't realistically possible to plant it out back. Shelter causes more of a problem. The back garden has the most! The front, not so much unless the wind blows from a certain direction and then the bordering trees will catch it, but unfortunately it's the best spot I have for it so I'm just going to have to hope that it flourishes. I just couldn't bear the thought of it being hoiked out of the ground where it was doing perfectly well (it as leaning however which is why its original owner uprooted it) and abandoned if I could try to give it a home.

I'm not sure what they are?

I'm wondering if these are friend or foe?
