Tomatoes

I am never trying to grow tomatoes outdoors in the UK again. Not great last year and this year total disaster. Will stick to buying them in the shops

Shrub ID - Best time for harsh cut back??

Posted: 09/09/2014 at 13:19

I have a beautiful Barbaris in my garden. Or what was a beautiful Barbaris. Unfriendly winds got the better of it this year, it grows at an angle as it was planted on a sloping bank and several batterings of the wind later it was almost touching the ground it had leaned so much so unfortunately I had to give it a really harsh cut back, I'm just hoping it still gives me some of that glorious pink colour next year

Oak tree problems

Posted: 09/09/2014 at 13:14

I've noticed in my garden that we have an awful lot of really unhealthy looking leaves on some of the trees, in particular the Oak and the Sycamore. Covered in horrible big black spots is the Sycamore and the Oak is covered in lumpy brown wart like lumps. Just about every leaf I can see on each tree. I don't know what all that's about, they seemed OK last year, maybe weather? Or do they have some horrible disease. The other trees I am seeing dying off in their multiples (not in my garden) are Chestnut trees. Row upon row upon row of them. All brown and dried up and dead already or well on their way. I saw something on TV a few months ago about the fate of a lot of Chestnut trees but I don't know anything about Oak or Sycamore. The Sycamores in my garden I could live without if I'm honest, horrible little breeders they are, but the Oaks I love. Any ideas anyone?

what is it?

Sorry Jennifer I can't blow up the pics to get a closer look, I get a blank page instead. I'm also having trouble loading pictures however so I don't know if this is a GW problem right now or not.

Trouble loading pictures

Hi everyone, is anyone else having trouble loading up pictures today? I've tried twice now on two different computers on two different operating systems and I'm getting the same thing each time, inside the box where the picture should be is a weeny teeny blue box and that's it.

Tomatoes

My tomatoes are appaling this year. Barely any fruit and what's there is slow to grow and so far I have precisely 1, yes 1, tomato that actually has any colour other than green. To be honest I'm not going to bother with tomatoes anymore, unless I can grow them under cover, in a controlled environment. The weather in the UK is just too unreliable to grow tomatoes successfully outdoors. Or maybe its just the weather conditions in my garden, which on any given day I swear are completely different to any one elses. This morning for example it was cold enough outside to see your breath. In August?!

Plant IDs

The leaves do still look like my campanula to me but yours is a much more established plant that mine so its possible its something entirely different with very similar looking leaves. Someone will know for sure.

what is this plant?

I only brough my campanula's a week or so ago as well from guy on local market. Not impressed. Won't be buying from him again. Not being harsh, its not the first thing I've brought from him that's curled up its toes within a week or two. I'll stick to garden centre reductions from now on, all of those are doing fantastically well.

The flowers usually Shutterfly, looks like you're going to have a battle with that

Your picture 2 looks like my campanula's right now, all the flower heads going brown and dropping off but the leaves look the same as mine. They're the only bit doing OK right now.
