Talkback: Couch grass

Posted: 23/03/2012 at 20:25

I pulled out a lot of roots too, but it can't be helped when you dig whether you go through some of them and even a tiny bit that breaks causes more to grow, yes I was fighting a losing battle, it was enemy number one, I got obsessed going out there to pull more out and made the grass bald in the process..! I never thought of roundup..

So in the end it beat me, and now none grows at all because I faked it! :0)

Talkback: How to plant out runner beans

Posted: 23/03/2012 at 08:10

Runner beans grow tall, about 6 feet or so!  They need plenty of water, so out with the watering can a lot! make sure you put up a frame if you are growing them up a fence, my father put a fillet of wood going across the top and nails at 4 inch intervals and do the same at the bottom.  Then tie strings from top to bottom, runner beans need a sturdy frame to support them.  Train your plants to grow right to left and keep watering them.  Runner bean plants will flower before they are ready for picking, some have red, some white.  The beans will be ready for picking in the Summer, don't let them grow too big or they will be tough, they are ready for picking when they are between 6 and 8 inches long, before you can see the bean from the outside.  You can also grow runner beans in a large tub, just put canes in and make it like a wigwam!  I rather like the strain called ''White Lady''

Keep picking the beans and you will get more.  Happy eating!

Good idea.

What Climber to have for a shaded area?

I agree with Mermaid, I have Trachelospermum jasminoides in a shady spot outside the back door, its smell and flowers are heavenly and I also have a blue clematis growing by it too in a pot, great choice!

Talkback: Couch grass

Couch grass was the bane of my life! I dug the garden several times and got lots of it out but it kept on coming up, it ruined every new lawn, so in the end I put a liner down and fake grass! It always looks nice!!!  No more couch grass or weeds either I have a narrow garden and it has lots of curves--I hate straight lines so mowing it wasn't easy anyway, so now I can enjoy the garden anytime!
