Well when I bought it, it said it was a Japanese peony. It differs only slightly from conventional peopnies in that it leas and buds earlier than the others. The buds are not so much round as heartshaped.

I must say I haven't noticed any earwigs around but I will try the paper and pot idea.

Something has chewed massive big holes in my peony rosebuds. This is the first year this Japanese peony has tried to flower (been in for ca. 8 years without flowering) so I am very angry about whatever bug it is. Anybody know what is the problem and how to stop it?

I sprayed the plant with bug killer when I discovered 3 of the buds were damaged but since then another two have been infected.

hello again, well I tried the soap solution against the blackfly and it seemed to help - coupled with my daily routine of searching the rose buds and squashing any errant bugs, they appear to be on the wane - thank goodness - thanks for the tip!

Re. this business of getting rid of insect pests I can report that having read your advice about the rhubard solution it has worked for me a treat against greenfly. They seem to shrivel up. My real problem is blackfly and the rhubard is not doing the trick here. I have tried 2 different chemical solutions but also to no avail. The blackfly are killing my rose buds off at an alarming rate. What can I do?

a bug is chewing holes in the buds!
