Prunus pruning

Posted: 12/06/2014 at 15:35

I planted a prunus hedge at the end of last year with mature plants (3-4ft tall) and nipped the ends to encourage some thickening which seems to have worked. If I prune it now after the spring flush has matured will this encourage further growth or should I leave it until the autumn. What I'm looking for is the best way to create a dense hedge fast. I think the variety was P.lauro Australia

Thanks for all the suggestions, my fav's are the wire and gattling gun but I'd add a couple of conning towers to complete the theme.

Actually my neighbour is a cracking shot and has dispatched quite a few over the years, along with the squirrels, but he's missed a couple this year.

I've heard that washing crystals under the soil is a trick but will try the chilli powder route. I've covered the remnants with strawberry mesh and hoping that the Verbascums grow back but they aren't romping away yet?

Flame Lily

I bought 3 Flame Lily tubers at Harrogate flower show on Friday and have potted them up in a terracotta pot and put them in the greenhouse.

I'm hoping to see some signs of life in a couple of weeks and would like to see if it can climb the trellis next to the patio, a nice sunny spot.

Has anyone had much success with this plant out in the open during our lovely summers or am I better giving it a bit of TLC, I dont have a consevatory but could leave it in the greenhouse I suppose.

Thanks

Rabbits!

I have two little fluffy bunnies (wild ones) munching their way through my Bruneria, heucheras and possibly my foxgloves and I'm finding it hard to resist the Elmer Fudd urges, bang bang!

Tried covering them and promoting a bit of growth but it just gives them more munching material and the plants are suffering, last year it was Scabious which they used to chew like liquorice sticks and leave the flower heads. Any tips before the lead flies?

What is eating my foxglove?

I have one that looks like that and I think it may be rabbits although I haven't seen them munching on it.

Should my toad lily be showing signs of life?

Hi I just noticed today that my toad lily is starting to show some growth, a good spread from last year. Keep your fingers crossed and it should pop up soon.
