Hi Lorraine, there's always later on this year as well If you don't have any success now try again mid summer outside.

Watch out for the slugs and snails on the new shoots

I sowed mine last year around june/july i think. Just left them outside with some protection from the rain and they grew quick.

Not sure at this time of year and it's still cold what would best. If it were me and I had sown a few pots, might be tempted to try some inside, in a propagator, taking the lid off when germinated and maybe the others outside in a sheltered spot. I would use a progator or covering of some sort as well.

Maybe others can help a bit more

I would just give them a good drink and see if that helps to get things going. You could always sow more if nothing happens

Need help with different types of plants

Posted: 06/04/2013 at 11:45

You're welcome. Been thinking back to last year........... had some calendulas in there, which did flower, maybe not at their best but still some colour, like wise snapdragons. I tended to put these towards the front of the bed where they got more sun. Maybe sweet williams might tolerate these conditions as well

Grew some sweet rocket from seed last year and put a few of them in there last Autumn, just to see what happens. These plants whilst not as big as some others are doing ok and should give me some flowers. Bugle/Ajuga seem to grow anywhere, lovely blue flowers in Spring, but very attractive ground cover for the rest of the year.

I grow a lot of my plants from seed so able to experiment and it doesn't cost me much

Need help with different types of plants

Hi Jem, snap. Remembered another plant that does well for me.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/419.shtml

I inherited this one and it's known to me as the false sunflower but it's proper name is an inula. Can get pretty big/bushy and it will spread. Flowers in the Summer and the insects love it

to pinch out or not

Posted: 06/04/2013 at 11:07

I've learnt from trial and error really. Plants that I pinch out are wallflowers, sweet williams, snapdragons. If I'm not sure and I have a got a few on the go. I pinch out some and leave the others, and then see what happens. If I can see that the plant is happy with that, I then do the rest

I had some success with my clemantis montana. Did take the cuttings last year when the plant was growing strongly.

Followed your advice Bunny, worked a treat fingers crossed got 3 new purple ones all for free. Might not have to ever grow them from seed again

One I had almost forgotten about, thought it had died has just started to pop through. Think it was a white one. Will now have to move the little one to make space for it
