Wallflowers

Sorry Verdun, don't do the who's got the biggest one?!!!  Not about wallflowers anyway.Gardening's not a competition, well not for me

I wouldn't know if you had bought them, grown them from seed and sown when or bought them as bare roots in the Autumn!!

All I would say is that it's still not too late to sow them now

When can new seeds be used

Posted: 12/07/2015 at 11:30

I try and leave the seeds on the plant until they are fully formed. A lot of seeds become brown or black and come away from the plant really easily.

If you take off the seeds when they are not fully formed I don't think they will germinate. Once collected, store in a paper envelope and then sow

I've got seeds forming on my delphs but they are no where near ready, the seed pods are still green, they should be brown and you will be able to see the seeds inside them when they are ready

Sowing perennial plants

Posted: 12/07/2015 at 11:25

I know that this has been mentioned on a few threads but I keep loosing them.

What can I sow now? Think I read that aqueligias, astrantias, sweet williams?

Could you give me some suggestions of some more that will germinate and be ready for planting out in the Autumn? Is there some general rule of thumb to follow with perennials?

I try and collect a lot of my seeds so sow when fresh off the plant but do want to grow something different. I'm sure I have loads of nice seeds tucked away in boxes

Thanks

Sorry Verdun, but I don't think what you saying is true, well not for me anyway. Those sown now will grow a lot, either way I've found them to be a lot better than the bare rooted ones that you were advocating.

One of the risk that I have found that sown too early in Spring means that you might have flowers the same year.

Looking forward to seeing the Fire king ones will be planted them in large groups, usually just collect my seeds from the mixed ones. They were one of the first plants I grew from seed when I started gardening, love them

See I would disagree. Sowed some mixed wallflowers a while ago and have just repotted them. There's plenty of time to sow them so that you get a great display for next year. Will be doing some more this week as well. Splashed out on some Fire king ones and some purple variety

In the past I've bought some bare root ones but I've always found that I've got much nicer plants from the ones I've grown myself.

Calendula was my first thought as well

Hi nut, yes I did, glad you like them. I inherited the plant many house moves ago now, keep bringing chunks of root of with me and keeps it going Mine looks like Gary's photo so will be flowering soon.

Wilting hydrangea

I don't grow hydrangeas. Yours doesn't look well with all plants like this once repotted and watered, stick them somewhere out of direct sun and give them some time, might perk up
