All you experts I need help - germination techniques

Posted: 08/04/2013 at 21:45

I'm finding the echinaceas and verbena quite tricky as well. Sowed both earlier in the year, got 3 echinecias up which are now the cold frame. Similar results last year with the echinaceas, but have at least one plant that is coming back through

A lot my scabious too has somehow managed to survive the winter, thinking they might even put on a show this year as well. Lots of green shoots coming up from the bottom of the plant

Seed swap

I'd be intereseted in the Verbena Bonariensis seeds Sam. Black Ball cornflowers sound interesting.

Had a quick rifle and I have some sweet pea seeds, Butterfly Kisses plus a few stragglers of different types/colours left over from last year.

Giant Larkspur "imperial mixed" Some Tanancetum. Verbena "sparkles mixed" and some Stock Virginian.

Beechgrove Garden Goes National.

I like a bit of Beechgrove. First time it's been on tv here and forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder blackest, I can get the regional versions tucked away in channel 900s, thursday evening is a bet better bet for me than early on Sunday morning. Didn't know that the iplayer isn't availble in Ireland

free seeds

Only just started getting into veg and have noticed that the veg seeds seem to be a lot more expensive than the flowers. Free seeds are great.

I've done the same Lyn, last year I sowed an entire packet of snap dragons, and they all germinated, gave loads away the garden was full of them, a great show. This year I've started to divide my seed trays into 3 and sow a bit more thinly.

Used Compost?

Posted: 08/04/2013 at 19:16

I mix it up with new compost to use in pots etc. Might consider throwing it on the beds though now. Is it best to dig it if you want to improve the soil or does it just become incorporated over time?

Hellebore Addiction

Been looking at these myself this year, not ever considered them before. Like their nodding heads. Do insects like them?

Today I feel so happy....

Posted: 08/04/2013 at 19:00

Hi Pentille, I'm happy because the majority of seeds I sowed are still alive and waiting for some more sunshine to get them really going and I've got loads more to sow

I've got one of those darlek ones Fairygirl, did get some useable compost out of it last year , in the veg raised beds as we speak.  I don't have a lot of space. Think the trick to any compost is to keep turning it

Larkspur and Monkshood

Posted: 07/04/2013 at 20:34

Larkspurs, I find them strange plants to grow from seed, just when you think nothing's happening up they come. I sowed mine off the plant last summer although they weren't big enough to plant out last year. They have survived in the frames and am now  nuturing them to go out this year

What has happened???

Hi Sam, good to see you Yes there has been a lot of bickering/unpleasantness and loss of manners. Like you I see the invite as just somewhere else to go and chat about gardening.

Will never use the term internet etiquette again

Most of mine have buds but are very slow to open. Think the cold weather has slowed them down
