Lynchis ('Ragged Robin')

When I sowed the seeds off the plant last Summer, I think they were very quick to germinate in the coldframe, maybe a couple of weeks. The plants that I have grown from seeds are short stocky rosette in shape, I'm expecting the longer stems to grow up into flowers later in the year.

I collected seeds from this plant last year maybe mid Summer, late june, early july when the pods were nice and dry and sowed straight away. I had a really good germination rates and have many 2nd generation plants already in the garden. I also swopped some of these seeds with another member earlier this year and they have germinated as well.

Maybe have a go at sowing some now indoors, keeping some back for a later sowing outdoors. Hope that helps......a bit

experiences with free offers of plants

I got the 36 perenial order from T&M last year, after I got over the shock of how tiny they were and a lot of growing on, I guess the price was adequate....but don't think I would do the same again. Think I could have got the same results from growing from seed. I also got the snowdrops in the green last year from them as well, didn't think the bulbs looked that great. Looked at the offer this year and now dispatch isn't until Sept, doesn't sound in the green to me.

Is this spring worse than last year's?

Definately worse than last year. Last Winter and Spring were very mild, no wonder my seeds did well. I have done some sowing earlier this year  but won't be doing any more for the next couple of weeks I think, which is very disappointing as then that takes us into April.

grass plant seeds

They are looking good to me Christopher, not ever grown grasses from seed but have seen the blue type in gardens I have visited and always liked them. Were they easy to germinate?

A further question, do grasses attract pollinators or other wildlife?

Not a teacher but in my world you can't have a floor outside a pub. A floor is a floor and that is something inside a building.

SEEDS

I'm trying the verbena for the first time this year and so far I've found them a bit a tricky, I've chilled them, not chilled them, put them inside and out but no luck.

Don't let that put you off though, others have had  better success with them than me. If I don't get anything soon, I will start again with some new seeds, they are lovely plants and I want some

I would have a quick look on the commercial sites like suttons or fothergills and see what they advise. Sweet peas I would just sow them into to some good compost. Might be worth sowing them in slightly deeper pots as they do grow deep root systems.

The first Gardeners' World

Happened to watch it again this morning, forgot to say that I really enjoyed the couple's garden, looked beautiful, they obviously knew their stuff. I liked their advice on just doing it and taking chances and making mistakes. I related to them as real gardeners.

Glad someone else finds Joe Swift's slot annoying

Not best pleased when the snow arrived here yesterday, thought we would escape it. No gardening done here at all.
