I'll try and load one up this week.

Talkback: Growing chillies from seed

Posted: 11/02/2013 at 14:08

I sowed 7 different Chilli seed varieties, all of which have produced healthy seed (though they sprang up earlier than expected!). Used a heated propogator, which I got for xmas. Would recommend doing this, as well as just making sure they have enough light and moisture...

... Just got to work out what to do with a load of Chilli seedlings in early Feb!

Rhododendron possibly dying

Posted: 11/02/2013 at 13:59

We have a Rhododendron that looked like it was dying, but it later developed lots of health new growth lower down (where there were no harsh winds beating it up). Have cut the whole thing down to where the growth is healthy, and hopefully all will be well.

Anyone know how you can tell the difference between a Mahonia Aquifolium and a Mahonia Japonica? I have one of the two in my back garden (loves part-sun, part shade!).

slug pellets help

Posted: 07/02/2013 at 12:01

Pellets (after a couple of goes) did clear a lot of Slugs & Snails from the garden (the garden had been left unattended by the previous owners for at least a year or two, so their were thousands!). The wildlife should be fine because you will NEVER completely get rid of the slugs & snails, and if you notice loads, clearly the wildlife either have other food sources, or have far too much choice on their hands!

Blueberry bushes

Posted: 07/02/2013 at 11:21

I got a pair of Blueberry bushes for my birthday end of last month (from Gluttenous Gardener) and they are currently dormant and in little Terrocotta Pots.

I'm currently debating whether to repot them both into large pots, or to plant them into the ground? I can see a clear advantage in using large pots, as I can bring them near the house in the colder months, as well as experiment with locations for them, but wanted to hear all your thoughts on the matter.

Hmmm, sounds a bit like our Oregon Grape bush (which I think is a Japonica).

That is an awesome name! Might have to keep an eye out for some seeds for that one next year.

One of the chilli varieties I am growing this year is an "Uba Tuba" chilli, which looks like this...

"The flesh of each pod is thin athough crisp to taste and they mature from green to red approximately 90-100 days after seedlings have emerged. The body of the pods have some detectable heat, but the wings are sweet and mild." - http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=Ubatuba&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search
