Chilli plants

Aphids. I know this is a little controversial, but I used some Pesticide spray on them and they were gone within a day.

Overgrown back garden

Lol. I wish our garden was like that this time last year when we moved into our new home!

Before:

Keeping in mind that the garden now looks more like this:

Still got a lot of work to do.

With yours I would rip it up and start again. If you sow the grass seed at the right time, it'll grow within a couple of months.

That is a genius Idea. Right, i'm gonna try and get a Venus fly trap (or any other recommendations?) this weekend!

Tiny black flies

Posted: 13/02/2013 at 13:36

I think Sotongeoff has hit the nail on the head. I shall have to try some of the suggestions  and see what I can do. They are not visibly harming the plants at the moment, but would rather get rid of them once and for good!

If anyone has other suggestions on ways to get rid of these little gits, please let me know

Tiny black flies

I have had little tiny flies, that have been in my dining room for about 6 months now. I did have a chilli plant that they all seemed to fly around (though they were not noticeable every day and you only ever see one or two at a time). I threw the plant out a month ago, and have since started growing some new chilli plant seedlings in the same area, and lo-and-behold the flies are back. We do have a couple of other plants in the room but you don't really ever notice any of the flies around them. They seem to like the soil more than the plants themselves.

Anybody have ANY idea where they could be lerking and what they could be? I can't work it out because it always appears like there is just one or two, but no matter how many a squash, there always seems to be one more flying around.

Talkback: Growing chillies from seed

Posted: 11/02/2013 at 14:08

I sowed 7 different Chilli seed varieties, all of which have produced healthy seed (though they sprang up earlier than expected!). Used a heated propogator, which I got for xmas. Would recommend doing this, as well as just making sure they have enough light and moisture...

... Just got to work out what to do with a load of Chilli seedlings in early Feb!

Rhododendron possibly dying

Posted: 11/02/2013 at 13:59

We have a Rhododendron that looked like it was dying, but it later developed lots of health new growth lower down (where there were no harsh winds beating it up). Have cut the whole thing down to where the growth is healthy, and hopefully all will be well.

Anyone know how you can tell the difference between a Mahonia Aquifolium and a Mahonia Japonica? I have one of the two in my back garden (loves part-sun, part shade!).

slug pellets help

Posted: 07/02/2013 at 12:01

Pellets (after a couple of goes) did clear a lot of Slugs & Snails from the garden (the garden had been left unattended by the previous owners for at least a year or two, so their were thousands!). The wildlife should be fine because you will NEVER completely get rid of the slugs & snails, and if you notice loads, clearly the wildlife either have other food sources, or have far too much choice on their hands!
