What's this purple stuff

Posted: 06/08/2016 at 21:10

I drowned a load of perennial weeds is a big tub and left it far longer than I meant to.  When I bottled it up today there was a bright purple scum round the edge and lots of stems have got a bubbly appearance.

I think it might be slime mould but not sure and either way is it safe to use the tea as fertiliser anput the dregs in the compost bin or is it safer to chuck it all away?

White bugs infesting compost bin

Don't worry Jayne - they're not nasty aphid whitefly.  Had them in my compost for yeas and never seen them on any plants I used the compost on.

They're natural and good so put on your lid and let themget on with it :)

Why doesn't my philadelphus smell?

Having nurtured a bare root plant for 3 years it's full of blooms this year but no scent!  As that's the reason i bought it i feel cheated so why?

Willow whips living fences, screening, root problems

Posted: 28/10/2014 at 09:49

I've planted some routed cuttings to make a twisted willow screen to devide a path and border this year and could do with some advice.

They're of varying sizes and i have in mind to weave them together. I heard somewhere recently that cutting them down will make them sprout more, like coppicing. Should i do that or prune back just to the main stems?

Actually am rethinking the whole idea because of the roots though!

Can I use any leaves for leaf mould?

I never have enough leaf mould from tree leaves and looking at the patch of crocosmia ready to be cleared wondered if those could go in the leaf mould rather than with the compost. Any thoughts?
