Garden arches planting - help needed

And all of Obelixx's suggestions for clematis - I'm with Trish for worrying about the arch looking bare but I got a group 2 and a group 1 from GW last year (so still only small this year) and I can hardly believe the growth rate on the one I chopped to the soil in March!

So I reckon I'll plant it up the arch and leave the seed heads on and hope for some frosts to pretty it up with maybe the Akebia on the other side

Seaside Oldie - best £20 I've ever spens is automatic openers for the windows - at least they have a chance at getting some ventilation.

Looks like the north has got it easiest today and tomorrow - we'll miss the worst of the rain and it's not too cold either.  V tempted to plant out the Sweetpease this wkend but there's a threat of grass frost so I'm not sure....

I had to give up on my Freecycle group becasue it was clogging my email and I couldn't change the settings.  But I've joined Freegle now so I'll look out for requests - every little helps when you're starting out

Def wouldn't put anything outside my house - if they weren't missiles they'd be strewn all over the pavement & road, like the litter that blows in my garden

Seaside Oldie, I'm donating mine to the World Environment Day event at the office - did it last year and they went in seconds and raised money to plant trees under the Woodland Trust scheme

Can't allow myself to buy plants other than the occasional P&P only GW offer so I content myself with 'shopping' at my Mum & Aunt's cold frames

It's working out well becasue Aunty is getting too infirm to garden at all now so she's happy they live on in a new garden - and in return I'm starting to make colourful pots each season that she can see from her window so everyone's happy

I've been doing this for 6 yrs now so in addition to Wintersongs good advice I'd add:

Have an overall plan in your head of how you're going to use the different areas of the garden (seating, veg, play areas, shed, greenhouse etc) and refine it as you see the impact of taking out stuff you don't like or which is getting past it's best.  That way when you start working on a section you'll be thinking about how it will link into other sections you are leaving til later.

Don't rush it - as you work around the garden you'll start to know it's little foibles of soil, sun, water etc which will help you put the right plant in the right place first time

Mark out potential paths etc with string, bricks, hosepipe - anything temporary and start using them before you cut them.  That way you can see if they feel awkward and adjust them before it's too late
