July in the garden!!

Posted: 12/07/2012 at 13:43

For once I think the North West has had the benefit of the better weather - still wet and lacking sunshine but we've had more than our fair share of the sun when it's around and no flodding.

I sowed a meadow and nursery cornlower mix this year and the flowers are up to my armpits and glorious.  The 2 new beds I planted in spring have done really well too - only problem being a friend mis-labelled some lupins so I've got pink in the hot border and red in the cool.  Hey ho - the best laid plans and all that.

The red lychnis has been glorious indeed and conincidentally I've planted an echinops nearby which is budding up nicely so hopefully my heart will be singing too

It's taken 5 years to get to this point and the joy and pleasure it's given this year has more than rewarded the har work and wait

Ditto with the pink geranium - the blue is much more contained and still loved by the bees.  I can cope with the welsh poppies and love th marigolds but I let a couple of giant nasturiums seed last year and they're everywhere this year - easy to get rid of tho' so not really a thug

Actually it suits me as I'm gardening quite a bit further north so am that little bit behind Monty

Horsetail - Help!

Posted: 12/07/2012 at 13:15

My neighbour is in a home now and here very old greenhouse collasped and was removed a few weeks ago.  All over the place where it stood horsetail has grown and now it's coming though to my garden - even popped up in the greenhouse.

2 q's - how do I treat it on my side and what do I ask them to do about such a huge infestation next door.

They strimmed it this week and I have a feeling you might tell me this is the worst thing to do!

Delphinium & Lupin

Slugs and snails have mullered my lupins - should I take the worst affected leaves off or leave them?  there's nothing but veins on many of them

Deutzia - should it stay or should it go now

Posted: 12/07/2012 at 12:52

A donated deutzia has been languishing in the wrong place for a couple of years until the proper borders were reay.  Thay are now so I was going to move it back end.

My quandary is this - is it of any value to wildlife?  I haven't got much space so everything in the garden has to be wildlife-friendly as well as attractive.

I don't have any particular love of the shrub and my alternatives for the spot are a black elder (already got) or a philadelphus (not got) - are either of those better for wildlife?  I'm thinking the elder is but I love the scent of philadelphus

Autumn sown sweet peas

Some sound advice here so thanx to everyone - I love sweetpeas with a passion and ordered some special ones this year but I did everything wrong and they're frankly pathetic

October sowing this year and no molly-coddling!
