Prposed EC legislation to restrict availability of our seeds

Posted: 07/05/2013 at 21:50

Doesn't seem to be http://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedlaw.html According to this lot

"On Monday May 6th a draconian new law was put before the European Commission, which creates new powers to classify and regulate all plant life anywhere in Europe......" they have links to two petitions.

Just very concerned. My friend in Greece who has an olive oil business, says it is now illegal for them to propagate or plant old types of tomatoes.  Beggars belief.im off to sign the petition as Brussels can keep their paws off my brussells!

I don't know who to believe mummy muddy paws. Don't think I believe any of the politicians but I trust Avaaz .org to highlight issues that need close scrutiny and a bit pressure on politicians to sit up and do their job

I've been  reading about this very worrying legislation. Has anyone else posted about it. The Soil Association, Organic Gardening News, the Scottish Farmers association are all sounding alarm bells about us being able to get hold of seed, trading seed and keeping our own for the next year. This is back door politics that will affect all gardeners. Shocking please read.

Thanks nutcutlet.

These big companies are difficult to tie down and not above falsifying data. I note that Merck and Pfizer have just been find for that. Thank goodness there are others on the case to help the bees. We just need to help give them a voice.

Any other plants we should look to for early feeding Bee witched?

Good news about the two year ban on these insecticides.

Cloggerhead unkindly accused me of lying about MY missives (specific to my property, Scot's Law) which forbid me from keeping bees, Chickens etc. My, and my neighbours plots were all sold with these conditions attached. The neighbour who sold the plots does not like the chickens and bees that stay opposite him. Sad but true.

Latest from Avaaz - Today the European proposal to protect bees from toxic pesticides failed to gain a majority. But the European Commission will appeal the decision and can still get it adopted! This week we got Spain on our side, let's keep up the pressure on Germany, the UK and other countries who abstained or opposed today.

On their site there's a section to email the secretary of state at DEFRA. I added my tuppence worth in a short email. I'm getting very stroppy in my old age but these people are accountable, or should be.

I was really miffed to find in my missives that I cannot keep bees on my property (nor rabbits, nor chickens) despite being out in the countryside. Some sad lawyer who's been stung in the past???
Thanks for the tip on Morrisons insect boxes. I've added that to the shopping list!

Just checked Avaaz site. Here's an update.
"Our voices were heard! After we delivered the petition, the European Commission recommended suspending 3 deadly poisons! But some countries and pesticide companies could try to block it before the final vote. Let's build the buzz to get a full ban on all bee killing pesticides!"
Almost 2,500,000 signed so far, which is great but as its an international petition, still needs a boost. Thanks again folks. I had contacted some bee societies when this first came out and asked if they as individuals could sign this. If anybody can think of any other bodies please pass on the link. Every little helps.

Brilliant. Avaas have had many successes. Here's hoping with our help they'll be successful this time too!

Glad someone is on the ball Lyon. The way to stop this is through education. I guess Gardeners world can only say so much for fear of a law suit. That's why I admire these folks at Avaaz. It's solely a matter of what's right and fair.

You're right Lyon, but if it were clear that "in saving your precious viburnum you will be killing our endangered bees" I'm sure it would make a difference. Psychologically - people will know they are guilty and part of the problem rather than just blaming a faceless company.
I can see why it's easier to stop the supply rather than get people to act responsibly.

Avaaz is still trying. People can still sign to save the bees!!!!

in 48 hours the European Union could move to ban the most poisonous pesticides, and pave the way to a global ban that would save bees from extinction.

Avaaz and leading MEPs will deliver our message ahead of this week's key meeting in Brussels:

If gardeners don't care, who will?
