I have four hens and a cock. They're coming up to a year now.The amount of eggs i get a day has differed in the winter but always 4 a day in the summer.I have noticed a few feathers around their house ,however i was told not to worry as in the winter they can moult. However i would of thought this was more likely to happen during the summer months. One of my hens'Daisy'seems to very popular with'Burdock'The Cock!Unfortunately she has lost a few feathers where he has pecked at her etc!!!  Iam wondrering if i should separate her from him for a bit? Somone suggested in knitting a coat  to cover her back where its gong bold!I spray the house with red mite spray every couple of months so i think they are clean.I try not to over worry about them .You can get over obsessed with checking poop ,bold spots etc.Lets face it we all ' over spoil our chickens'

what are these insects?

If the lemon tree isn't too big i would clean every leaf with a damp cloth to get rid of them .I do,nt like using chemicals.Iwould put some fertiliser in the soil as it sounds like it,s lacking some nutrients and give it a good drink

Why did you all start gardening?

It all started when i bought my 1st house age 19.Next door invited me round and i was overcome by the smell and the colour in the garden. It was full of hanging baskets with every kind of brightly coloured flower you can imagine. My garden was a square lawn,so boring in comparison.I remember saying to them that  i would love a garden with hanging baskets but would,nt know where to start. The lady gave me a seed tray some seeds and said have ago'If you never try you'll never achieve anything'I did,nt achieve much in that particular garden.Too young, night clubing mostly however later on in my next house i remembered what the previous next door neighbour had said and started to have a dabble and to my surprise i was getting results.Ithen started watching the series 'How to be a gardener'by Alan Titchmarsh and i was totally inspired.I followed all his advice and my garden started to be transformed. Then i started watching 'Open Gardens'on BBC 2 with Carol Klein and realised that my garden was as good as some of the garden featured, that was in 2007/8.I then decided that with a bit more hard work i would contact the NGS and see if my garden was good enough to open next year and raise some moneyfor chariy. The answer was 'YES' All my hard work had paid off,So Thankyou to the next door neighbour all those years ago.I,d love her to come and see it!!

You wont believe this. They are lenghs of plastic skirting board left over from our conservatory which was erected 10 years ago.At the time i had little money so i used anything left over, however wood would probably look better, when the grass grows slightly it hides it.At least it wont rot!!

Garden looking dreadful at the moment with all the rain.Grass is like mush as i have to walk on it to get to my chickens, hope it grows back OK! Leadfarmer asked what plants i,d used to line my pathways.Buxus Sempervirens,I've shaped them into box balls now they've grown abit bigger however the first lot i put in  a few years ago got box blight so i had to dispose of them on the bonfire and start again ,a common problem at the moment with all the rain we 've been having.Has anyone else had the same problem?

Hi there,I am always interested in getting inspiration on garden design from other gardeners.I have split my garden to different rooms for interest an have had some great ideas from various shows and  Alan Titchmarch'How to be a Gardener' I am opening my garden next year for NGS and am extremely nervous howevever the prospect of raising money for charity makesit all worth while.
