Broccoli problem

Posted: 20/04/2013 at 13:28

Hi there,

Planted purple sprouting broccili last year (I'm a novice). Attached picture shows it now. Presumably its about to flower. It never went purple. So two questions. Presumably I can dig it all out and pop on the compost heap. Any suggestions how to avoid this next year?

Many thanks,

James

Dogwood Cuttings

Posted: 07/01/2013 at 11:30

Hi there,

This year will be my third year running trying this - and I'd love not to fail again. In a GW video it looks so simple, just stick them in the ground the right way up and hey presto.

I've put my 12" cuttings in both pots, and in the raised veg bed with no success. I get a few green shoots but these seem to get destroyed by the frost. This year I am planning to stick them in my unheated greenhouse to see if that helps.

Any tips on when and how to do this greatly appreciated

As a commuting office working I'm the same as Norm2 - out at 7 and back at 7. I'm very envious of retirees

My First year

Posted: 05/11/2012 at 13:03

I'm only on my second year - so certainly no expert. I think it has been a bad year for carrots (but probably varies regionally). I know Monty's on GW were a disaster. I sowed 3 times as the previous sowings failed. Now I have about 20 small thin carrots! My parsnips grew - but yet to find out if they are of any size, or more importantly tastse good.

Overwintering Cannas

Posted: 05/11/2012 at 13:00

I've just bought 6 Cannas from the garden centre (very cheap). As Sue says above some are forming new small plants. The advice above makes sense, not too cold, dry, but not too dry. Can I leave them in the pots or do I need to pull them out? I plan to put them in our conservatory in which the radiator only kicks in if it falls below zero

Many thanks

James

Brassica Netting

As a beginer it was my first year growing Kale, broccoli etc. I started them off in plugs and planted them out in a raised bed in May. 2 days later there were just a few stalks left. After falsely accusing the slugs I realised it was birds (probably the two fat wood pigeons) and stuck some netting over them. This solved the problem BUT can I now remove the netting? Do the birds only go for the tender young shoots or will they still eat my 2 foot tall Kale and broccoli in October?

Many thanks

Great advice - thank you for your replies

Greenhouse

Posted: 16/10/2012 at 13:03

I bought my first greenhouse in February this year. Its been fantastic. Obviously I've not even had a whole year using it, but a few things are already evident. Firstly (as posted above) go for the biggest option. I got an 8 x 12, which seemed huge when empty but is now jammed full. Secondly getting a flat base is critical. I cannot stress this enough! Thirdly auto opening vents are a life saver, especially if you are at work during the day or go away.

I built mine so that it was open to the earth, and have half staging and half beds for things like tomatoes and salads. I have no idea if this was a good move or not yet!

Good luck - I've loved every second of mine.

Buying new apple trees

Posted: 16/10/2012 at 12:48

Hi there,

I have a small paddock area that I am planning to put in 3 apple trees, (or maybe 2 apple and a cherry) this winter. I understand the issues around pollination well enough to get me going, my question is around tree size that I buy. From what I have read, its better to buy young saplings as these get going quicker and adapt to the local conditions better, but I don't really want to be waiting 5 years for my first apple. What is a good trade off here - what size / age do most amateur gardeners buy trees?

Any other hints are words of advice in this area would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

James
