End of season reduced Cannas

Posted: 04/10/2012 at 10:37

Hi there,

I see at my B&Q at the moment that a lot of plants are on sale as they die off for the winter. I bought a few Hostas at half price yesterday which I will plant out next spring. But I was wondering about Cannas (which I know nothing about). I'd love to put some in next year. Is it a good idea to buy up some half price plants now, stick them in the greenhouse and plant out in spring, or is it better to buy the corms next year?

Many thanks,

James

Moving Irises now?

Posted: 21/09/2012 at 14:57

Hi There,

I have a bed with both bearded irises and regular ones. As I novice the difference seems to be one has a mass of tangled roots and the other a rhisome. Its all very congested and I've just finished digging a new bed which, being empty, seems a logical place to move some irises to. I'm wondering if its too late in the year now to move these?

Many thanks

James

Tomato rot?

Posted: 21/09/2012 at 14:52

I agree it does look a bit like the photo of late blight. Maybe I've just been lucky - I've removed the fruit as soon as I noticed a problem.

I have used liquid tomato fertiliser - that could be the issue and would explain why its only the lower ones where I watered

Tomato rot?

No - its only on the lowest fruit. The rest of the toatoes are all slowly ripening / still growing. My only thought was that these tomatoes would have been the only ones to have been splashed by me watering, so I wondered if that could somehow be the cause (the waterbutt water certainly isn't drinkable!), or maybe splash up from the earth?

Here's the proof

Thanks for your reply. Strange that I've had the lowest tomatoes doing this for 3 to 4 weeks now, but remainder (75%) and plants all healthy. If it is blight what are the ramifications for the soil (they are planted into the ground, not gowbags)?

Again, many thanks for any help

tree stump

Posted: 20/09/2012 at 23:07

I had to remove 2, 2 foot aspen stumps because there were hundreds of runnig coming from it. In the end I hired a guy with a minidigger. Even with that it took 2 hours to get one out and involved cutting through the tap root manually while the stump was lifted. No way it ever would have been dug out manually. Cost £200 but I though it was money well spent

Tomato rot?

Hi there,

Its my first time growing tomatoes in the greenhouse. Almost all the tomatoes on the lowest trusses have some kind of rot / infection. See pic below

 I'd love to know

  • what's wrong
  • how to avoid it next year
  • Can I compost them, or is it in the rcycle bin?
Many thanks in advance for your help   James

Hi There,

New to forum - can't upload photos. Trying to do it directly (rather than link to photobucket or something). I click on tree icon, select the photo and hit upload. This all works. But when I then hit the save button nothing happens. I've traied about 10 times.

I'm using Chrome

Thanks!

James
